Getting notes to audition in the MIDI editor?

Now that pre rendering is "always on" I can't get notes in the MIDI editor to audition(play) when I click on them, I have to open the plugin interface and set it to "always run in real-time when interface is open".
Is there a way to activate real time for VI's whether they are opened or not, I do a lot of scrolling around in the MIDI editor and this is slowing me down like crazy.
