Lately I've had to re-visit Audio MIDI Setup frequently to enter settings. For some reason the settings aren't holding. For example, if I set MOTU 828 Out 1,2 as my "Use this device for sound output" it will work for a day or two, then I'll have to reset it. When I go to that panel, the settings haven't changed - they are simply ignored. The solution is to set it to something else then back again. I wasn't sure where these settings are saved so I replaced the pram battery (or whatever it's called), which was probably due for replacement anyway. Problem remains. Any ideas?

I’d replace the battery as you already did. Now reset the NV RAM — simply replacing the battery might not do it unless the power cable was removed at the time. This resets your FW port to default among other things.

A Safe Boot will rebuild any corrupted paths and reset caches.

I had an issue with my El Cap drive recently that was fixed when I booted into the Repair Partition and reinstalled the OS — don’t know what happened (I was uninstalling and reinstalling a lot on that drive) but the reinstall fixed me up.

There are other possible causes, of course. Some can be hardware such as a failing port in your 828. Try the other one.

I had issues with my FW port going to sleep and never waking up. Setting my iMac to never sleep fixed that.

DP and a few other apps don’t play nicely with App Nap. If you haven’t disabled it globally, do so. Only portables should have it enabled. It serves no purpose on a desktop Mac.

I'd kill the a/MIDI plist and build a new setup from scratch.

Yes, I reset the NV RAM when I replaced the battery, but I'll look into the other things you guys have suggested. Thanks for the feedback!

I tried this and so far, so good. It's still too early to tell since this is an intermittent problem, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
