Just Venting

Post by Phil O »

Just got back from the EW. They had to stitch up the ring finger of my left hand. I had an argument with a very sharp chef's knife and the knife won the argument. Playing tomorrow night is REALLY going to suck.

Ouch! I hope you recover soon and no serious damage was done. It really is nasty to feel how a knife cuts your finger like hot butter.

Thanks for the kind words. The real story behind the story is I was drying the knife when my 3 year old grandson ran into me full bore. His head hit me right where you don't want to get hit. (I hate when kids do that.) I doubled over and fumbled the knife. Luckily the kid didn't get hurt.

Like Emily Latella used to say, "It's always something."

I can relate. About 6 weeks ago I was holding a wine glass and went to run down a few tunes for a gig at midnight. It was a Saturday at 8:30pm. Earlier in the day I moved the piano bench to my studio (the grand is in the living room). So instinctively I put the music on the piano and sat on the imaginary bench.

Best Buster Keaton impression ever. The glass in my left hand hit a cabinet as I rolled backwards. The stem broke and slashed open the edge of my hand between the pinky and wrist. We were in the ER in 10 min. By 9:30 they had X-rayed me for glass shards (none) and glued me shut. Not even a bandaid!

I made it to the show by midnight and played until 5:15 (not non-stop, but a lot). It remains sore to this day as it was quite deep. I couldn't see bone but the flesh was torn pretty deep about 1/2" wide at the entry point.

Had it been my wrist or a finger it would have been a much different story. I hope you heal fast. Next time, wear a cup. :)

I've been in the ER more than once after trying to get my daughters' Christmas presents out of impossible packaging while using sharp objects. One year, the ER triage nurse looked at me and asked, "Weren't you in here last Christmas?"

Being left handed, my right hand has quite a few scars that are still visible.
