Out of application memory...

Has anyone else noticed an increased occurrence of the "Running out of Application Memory" since *either* the introduction of DP 9.5, or the Sierra 10.12.6 update?

Where are you seeing it? Does it pop up in an OS message?

Not since I upgraded my RAM from 24 to 32G and learned to reboot every day.

Sometimes, I would check available RAM in TTP to find out I had less than 1G available.

Browsers and web sites seem to be the biggest culprits but so many apps and plug-ins have memory leaks that this becomes more common as they add up.

Running sudo purge in Terminal frees up some memory but nothing is as effective as a reboot.

In TechTool Pro, I run the Memory test but stop as soon as it tells me how much is free—otherwise, it takes quite awhile.

Oh yeah, shut down... I've been shutting down WHENEVER not using the Mac for more than about 3 or 4 hours. Been doing that for decades w/o any issues.

What I would guess a tech guy might suggest would be to start a new user account and see if the problem persists. Then I'd start looking at what's loading in at startup. But you know all that... Saturday night man. You're gonna miss a good one. Be a heathen, c'mon down! LOL

Not a problem here, even with memory hogs. Does Activity Monitor show "Swap Used"?

I keep my machine up at night (pour coffee into the unused 2nd optical drive slot) because I sometimes need remote access. I'm not doing anything different than I've ever done, but I have been doing more projects at 96K recently. I could reboot the machine when I get into the studio daily- it hasn't yet happened twice in the same day.

A Hardware Monitor warning (lost connection to a sensor) seems to be a canary in the coal mine, i.e., an early warning. If I see that I should save and reboot.

But like I say except for increased work at 96K I'm not doing anything different than I've done for a long time. (Except maybe moved to Opera for browsing- I should go back to Safari and see if the problem goes away)

We have seen this happen 3x here Gary. Out of nowhere. It is NOT sierra as we are on el capitan with the big rig. But it is since DP 9.5. All of a sudden 48GB are gone. LOL

I have discussed this personally with Andrew B. @ Motu who has been top notch for us the past few years. He is aware of this thread too. If you have anything to add, feel free to post it in this thread so he can see it too.
