New Digital Film Standard

Post by qo »

Looks like Hollywood studios have agreed on a standard for digital film distribution/projection in US theaters.

HERE

Digital Cinema Initiatives LLC, a venture formed in 2002 to establish standards, today released the final system requirements and specifications to help theater projector and equipment manufacturers create compatible digital cinema devices in the United States.

Not sure how/if this affects us audio guys. Maybe it doesn't? I just don't know enough about it.

A quick perusal of their "white paper-ish" PDF tells us this:

It'll be Bradcast Wave format (.WAV). Bit depth of 24bit. Sample rates of either 48k or 96k, which theater projectors will be able to auto-adjust to on-the-fly. There'll be 16 audio channels to fill up, although only 6 or 8 are currently mapped/suggested (common surround sound set-ups) -- the rest are empty.
