Processing way up - playback zero

Hi,
I've got a file with lots of tracks and plugins. At the fullest section of the piece I get distortion. But not when I solo everything.
The Audio Performance bars indicate Processing jumps way up when un-soloed. Then backs off when I solo everything. But if I'm soloing everything I thought that's the same as solo off.
Also, the Playback bar shows no usage at all. Just the processing bar. AND it's almost halfway even when the playback isn't running.
I thought the Playback would be showing something during playback. Not so much the Processing.
