Audio Disk Image problem

I just upgraded to Sierra a couple days ago. Haven't had to make a disk image of a CD for a while, but it used to work just fine.

Now, when I try to make a .cdr image file of a CD I'm producing for a friend, using Disk Utility (choosing DVD/CD Master, no encryption), neither of my Macs is able to mount it - I get the same message on both: "no mountable file systems." The image seems to be writing just fine, and has the proper size, but I am completely unable to mount it. I've spent the last 24+ hours researching this problem and found no useful answers...things I've tried include:

making a cdr of a commercial cd - same result!
writing the image in safe mode - same result
burning an audio cd from DP and then creating the image file from that - same result (actually, that was the first thing I did)
burning the image on both my iMac and Macbook Pro - same results
using Terminal and the hdiutil command - no help either burning or mounting, using various options

I am at a complete loss about this. Is it Sierra? Should I go back to Yosemite whence I came? Disk Utility seems pretty lame in Sierra compared to it's former incarnation...

Thanks,

Tony

Disk burning doesn't work in Disk Utility anymore. Use iTunes beginning with OS 10.11. Google is your friend.

DU still has its uses but this is no longer one of them. Most of its remaining functions must be run from the Repar Partition. Option-Boot and select.

Toast 15 still works as before and is much easier. The various components are available from the App Store. I prefer the standalone, available from many resellers including Cult of Mac for $49.95.

Thanks, Mike,

But, I don't see how to create a disk image file (suitable for uploading) in iTunes...i want to send the image to my client (who is in another state) so he can burn a cd for himself. It's easy enough to burn a physical cd in iTunes of course, but creating an audio cd disk image suitable for uploading? Am I missing something? I'd be happy for a referral to a link, if you have it - I didn't see anything, and spent hours searching...

Google is still your friend. Disk Utility is how you create a disk image. iTunes is what you use to burn it to a disk.

I do not use iTunes nor Disk Utility for these functions. I find Toast 15 worth every penny so that I don't have to bother with that convoluted nonsense.

Thank you for the time and effort. It's certainly possible I am missing the solution in what you are offering me...i just now followed the instructions again, exactly, step-by-step, with my client's disk and then with a commercial disk, and again it gave me useless, nonmounting .cdr files. The disk images I create in Disk Utility will not mount, much less be seen by iTunes. They consistently fail with the error message "no mountable filesystems."

Toast will burn an image, but only in sd2f format, which is useless to my client.

I have now found a way to make a burnable iso image I can send to my client, but he also needs the "Burn" app to burn it to cd, which I will also send him...sigh...and gonna call Apple tomorrow to see if they can help me sort this out.

Thanks again,

Tony

Sierra system here. I haven't created a disk image in quite a while, so this thread intrigued me. I agree that Disk Utility is a shadow of its former self, but I just tried making a .cdr image and it worked just fine. I know that's not much help, but I'll continue to try and see what your problem might be. Does your system mount other disk images?

The instructions work for me. It also confirms that staying with Toast is a good idea for me.

In situations like this, I ask myself what my time is worth.

thanks, cuttime - yes, other disk images mount, including old .cdrs made (of dvds, i don't have any cd images lying about, i'll try to find one), including dmgs and imgs.

the .cdr you made actually mounts? and looks like an audio cd (the icon)?

i haven't called apple yet - had to take some time to do other things!

I have no trouble if I follow the instructions but it takes a bit of looking sideways to figure out what applies and when. No thanks.

Yes it mounts, but interestingly, I get a generic icon with a .cdr extension.
