1248 installation baffling me! plz help!

Hello,
I just got my first Motu product and Im really not stoked with how confusing itt seems to get it set up and going.
What is the control/mixer app for routing and monitoring?
Exactly what driver do I need?
What is the "Motu Discovery?" It does absolutely nothing when I click on it, though my computer shows it to be an app thats running.
Aslo the motu updater opens and tells me that i need to update the firmware. When I try this it goes nowhere. it says please connect ethernet cable. Is this necessary? Why not thunderbolt or usb?
Ive tried the drivers listed for the 1248, at least as far as I can tell, and Im getting nowhere. Why is this so complicated? Ive owned many interfaces and never had a single problem like this..
