on da fence! firewire video playback

Post by martian »

welcome to me quandry!

I am a reg'd user of 4.1 - don't use it for post tho.. haven't look at dp for nearly a couple of years actually.... went to the dark side with PT LE - but I am trying a project now however- I just think it's disgusting of PT to charge US$500 to open an save OMF's..... ( lets not discuss track and bussing limitations )

wondering if it's worth bunging the US$149 for the DP upgrade?

does firewire now have delay compensation - I use PT currently and u can set a compensation there. how to do with DP? can't believe it's automatic? and not convinced of the lipsync from the OMF at the min...

the reason I do use PT is cos I like the browser in it- I have Shed loads of SFX on my drives.... great for straight audio editing

any elegant solution for previewing SFX in DP? double clickin and using qt don't rock my boat- PT solution is great.... stereo clips can go on 2 adjacent mono tracks or single stereo tracks... and u can drag them back at forth at whim....

the OMF I had gave me some music 2. was a pain to get that from dual mono onto a streo track- ended up bouncing to disk......

would appreciate any tips- one thing for sure DP certainly is prettier than PT and some parts are nicer.... I'm actually thinking on running me laptop as an SFX machine and playing sounds into DP!!! ( I used to do this with my fairlight,,, but it seems a bit ridiculous!!!)

thanks

For post PT seems alot stronger. Bringing in OMFs is easy and alot more elegant. Previewing and I/P SFX is alot less steps and theedit page and keyboard short cuts are faster. For scoring to picture / MIDI DP is the bomb.

What was your question about FW video playback?

is the DV codec and firewire not introducing a delay?

in PT u make a sample movie leader - jog frame to the pops and place beeps.

then adjust the movie PB offset til it syncs while playing back....

with DP there aint no options... and the sync to picture seems soft.

haven't really tried the OMF demo in PT.. the demo expired.. but how can it be worth US500???? opening is opening??

With OSX, you can preview most audio file types in the Finder. Just click on the right view tab in any window, and when you click the file, a player transport pops up to the right... no separate application necessary. Want to catalog your files? You can use iTunes for that (although I don't think iTunes supports split stereo files (It didn't use to.).

The prob with using DP for previewing is that DP can only use split SD files, and has to convert any other file type before it can be played. If you end up not using them, you clog your drive.

have gone back over to PT to finish project...

I will check the video sync when have more time - but if I set the chunk time of the sequence the 9 or 10 frames mentioned in the manual - is that not going to affect the movie when in "pause" so if I jog to the frame and spot some FX then in playback they won't sync?? perhaps buffy could be used on a master fader?

I did do part of the projct here- I enjoyed using the automation things like the EQ's are better and easier than say EQII in PT - the break point editing wasn't as easy tho... thankfully my FW1884 helped a bit there.

I imported and edited the OMF - yay for faster than realtime bounces!! which I slipped back into protools..

regardin the importing of audio - yes I like the way you can drag into the sequence from the browser- but I find previewing sounds there a little awkward - wot about something like soundminer - or other 3rd party app?

before DP was unstable- I think that must have been the OSX driver wuth my Mbox ( suspect digidesign behind that ) with the tascam - it's been very reliable....

DP has offset since 4.5. So when stopped the frame displays correctly, and when you hit play the offset kicks in. Works perfectly.

Oh and 4.5 worth every penny!!

OK - it's definitely slippin closer to the upgrade...

how do you find the tempo finding abilities of DP now? Is it as automatic as ableton?

I read that it drags in REX files from the browser too? how do they appear in DP? as audio slices or as a MIDI track with a sampler?

Actually not too fussed if reason is rewiring nice n stable?

thanks!
