Yikes, forgot the Dorrito Brothers decided to diss their silent film careers. :-)

Good to know about Overture though; I didn't realize it was evolving and at "modern" status regarding stuff like Music XML 3. I'll give it a look. I last looked at it 5-6 years ago.

Hmm, $119 for a cross-grade:

Not bad, compared to other notation apps.

If Dorico can do anything beyond a church hymnal, I couldn't see it.

I bit the bullet and got Finale. I'm such a sucker for punishment. :shake:

Here's the thing... Finale 2014.5 works fine and still has TIFF import and OCR as well as the movie window. So I'm "stuck" on that; no need to get a Microsoft Surface just because I don't like the new version of Finale. And really, what does the "25" in Finale 25 mean?

Two bits?

A Roger Rabbit scene comes to mind.

I think the "25" may stand either for "25th anniversary" or the number of "official" releases of any note (including point releases that add features vs. simple bug fix updates).

Overture 5 supports movies now? Latest OSX? I used to use it in the Opcode days and liked it lots.

There were early reports of issues with Mac, but those were hopefully worked out.

If you end up trying Overture 5, please report back here. I'd like to hear what you think.

Yes to both.

Video Window:
For film composers, Overture now comes with a video window making it easy to write film scores. Scores and video are automatically synced.

The v.5 User Guide is not online but it's easy to access from within the program. The far right tab lets you search. Movie or Video brings up the instructions (I have not tried it).

The current build, 5.1.1 is pretty good, something I couldn't say about 5 in previous versions. I held off buying till it was.

The demo is fully functioning for 30 days. Afterward, the demo still works but you can't save or print.
I used to use it in the Opcode days and liked it lots.
It will open scores back to Overture 3 and Don has been building functionality to open earlier versions but not all character sets are supported (yet?). I did so little in Opcode Overture 1—in fact, I bought it that so I could open DMCS files and save as MIDI, now that I recall. I still have if functioning on my G4 in OS 9.

I bought Overture 5 because it is the closest to Encore that I can find with MusicXML 3 support. It may wind up replacing Finale for my needs—too early to tell.

Thanks, Mike. Soon as things here slow
down a bit I'm definitely going for the demo.

Wait till tomorrow at least or contact me for the latest patch—it's small enough to email and I should have a link.
