MOTU 896 - How to make Main Out appear at other analog outs

From reading the manual, I understood (or clearly misunderstood) that one could monitor the main output from any of the analog outs by clicking the "Monitor" button for those outputs in the CueMix console. But, as I'm sure you guys know, that didn't work.

I'll read it again to see what I'm misunderstanding, but does anyone here know how to monitor the mains from other analog outs? I'd like to use four of them to drive a second set of monitors and a headphone amp.

Thanks in advance...

The mains out are always coming thru the analog out xlrs
You can link 1 additional out to the mains, i. e. AES ( what I do ) for monitoring
With the newest driver / Motu Audio Setup ( 64254 ) I can't do this ( > assign main out tab ), via Apple's AudioMidi Setup it works...
Something must have changed in the new drivers, or I'm overseeing the obvious
Or you can switch the output routing in Cuemix to your desired outputs
Or switch outputs in DP...
I'm using Cuemix FX for the 896mk3/Hs
don't remember how it looks for the 896, sorry

I think you might have misunderstood. I am hoping to send the same signal from the Main Outs to two pairs of additional analog outputs.

Well you can duplicate the main out to 1 additional output, not more...
I do it like
Main > XLR analog main out ( always assigned )
Main > assign to AES
no more than 2 with main.
With Cuemix that is.
In DP, you can create outputs as many the 896 has and use aux sends...
Do I still misunderstand ?

Yes. I'm trying to drive analog monitors. Can't use the digital outs.

Main out XLR > 1st pair
Main assign to analog ( i.e. 7 and 8 XLR ) > 2nd pair

Are you using DP ?
If yes, you could create a submaster ( aux ) and use it's aux sends to individual outputs on the 896 ...

Klaus, well, yeah, that's what I did, in terms of wiring, but I can't get Main Outs to play from Analog out 7-8.

It should be possible to assign main output from within Motu Audio Setup, but as I said,
here with 10.6.8 and the latest Motu Audio Install ( 64254 ) it doesn't work,
maybe some Motu rep can chime in...Dave comes to my mind
I had to do this from within Apple's AudioMidiSetup :
In AMSetup audio window,
- select the 896
- select main out in the output dropdown
- select configure speaker, make the desired analog output active ,in the dropdown ( l and r )
select for l and r .
You can setup each output that way.
Hope to be of help

I sincerely appreciate the help, Klaus. I'm on 10.10.5, and AMS doesn't seem to have the controls you're referencing. So far, no joy.

If MOTU doesn't have any ideas, I'll just cave and buy a Big Knob or something. That'll do what my console use to do... push a button, switch monitors.

EDIT: Just spoke to a tech support rep at MOTU. The hot set up is to run a single /PDIF cable from the S/PDIF Out to the S/PDIF In on the unit, creating a loop. The you can create new mixes in CueMix and send the S/PDIF In signal to any or or all pairs of Analog Outs.

That's the trick.

Ah yes, forgot about the loopback... since it works here for 1 additional mirrored output without loopback, and I sometimes need the spdif too...

Great it works for you
So Motu Audio Setup doesn't look the same in 10.x as before ?
Could you send me a screenshot ?

Did Apple change something again ?
( I'm on 10.6.8 / 10.7.5 testing, with my Minis 1,1 C2D upgraded )

Cheers

Actually, you were right. All those options were there. But it's a bit too cumbersome for a speaker switcher.

I may still just buy a passive switcher box.

Hehehe,
you arrived at the same situation like me...
I even built a symmetrical one around a 3 pos switch including xlr cables.
