I don't understand; ROM is read-only memory. How could this be used to store configuration data?
Even if the MkIII used flash RAM, that'd still require a battery to keep it alive.

I'm sure he was referring to EPROM (EEPROM / EROM...whatever your flavor) and said ROM. I've heard the term thrown loosely like that before.
It's function is similar to today's flash memory used in SSD drives and USB sticks...no battery, unlike Flash RAM, which does need constant current.

Most of the older MOTU MIDI devices including both of mine have a C2032 battery and I know that the newest ones do not.
I have not seen my 2408 in years. It's on loan to a friend and I hope she never gives it back (even though I have a G4 that will take the 324 card).
