iPhoto (and you thought iTunes was weird!)

Anyone with older versions (7-9) of iPhoto who upgrades to "the park" OS (hopefully someday "the rock" OS) may have to upgrade their iPhoto library. Easy enough, but an unexpected procedure. Old iPhoto won't run, the update is free, as is the extra program you need to update the library. Nice once you're done, but a PITA if you thought you were going to just open iPhoto and grab a shot.
OTH, I don't find iTunes to be problematic at all, but then again, some people still use Waves. Go (recon)figure!

What extra program?
iPhoto did my conversion without anything else
I suppose iMovie is similar. Actually, when you download the newest version, it also makes some kind of conversion, and you get to keep the old and new iMovie apps. You can still run the old movies from the old version, and viceversa.

Oh, I see.
I must've updated from a later version.
So the newest current version is 9.6 (910.29), correct? My App store doesn't show anything else/

It's pretty common for new iPhoto and Aperture versions to start by updating the picture library. Normally it warns you that the updated library can not be opened by older versions of the application. I've never known an update of this sort where I lost anything or any ability to modify the edit settings for a picture.
Apparently, in a few months both iPhoto and Aperture will be gone and replaced by Photo. The newest updates just provide Yosemite compatibility.

If your library is from iPhoto '09 (v8.x) or later, you don't need to use this tool.
This is an old issue. I am surprised you're encountering it now.
If your version is older than 9.1, there can be a problem since older versions did not update automatically via Software Update or App Store. The 9.1 update can be found here. Once run, the App Store should keep you up to date.

Most people got encountered this with the Mavericks install. This is not a Yosemite issue.

Well i was using iPhoto all along. I don't think I used it in Yo' until today bur surely used it a lot in Mavericks. I also update my apps regularly so why now? No clue.
