20" Mac LCD dvi seems to have died...

As the title says 1 of my monitors I use with my MacPro seems to have suddenly died...
I switched the displays(on vid card output) and the 2nd monitor is working,so I guess the Mac and the card are OK.
Do these monitors just suddenly die,is there any other way to see if I can get this to work(power up)?
I've restarted the Mac and tried powering up the LCD but it seems dead.
Are there any good but cheap 20" or 24" alternative monitors with DVI that anyone can recommend?
Thanks

I have been able to pick up a couple for about $100 apiece from the local universities' surplus
store. If you are in NYC there should be a couple schools around you. Or just google what you're looking for, something should come up. Also in NYC you have B and H they have used stuff, I've been buying hard drives from them (not used though).
Good Luck

I had my LCD display die a couple of months ago, just out of the blue while I was using it. It just went dark, and I could not revive it. Anyway, idk about cheap replacements because I went out and got an LED.

Most common things to go are a 29¢ capacitor (pretty easy to fix) and the backlight (not so easy).

My Viewsonic monitors are very reliable and have DVI.

You can get 24" monitors for less than the diagnostic fee to look at repairing the one you have. The backlit ones are brighter but more expensive.

My 24" cost $129. It's not backlit but runs quite cool and is only slightly less bright than my iMac. I use it as a second monitor.

thanks all,I guess after getting 8+ years out of the 20" I really can't complain. :)
A few I'm looking at say dvi-d, will these work in place of dvi?
I'm looking at Acer,Viewsonic etc..... they don't say Mac or Windows compatibility,so I'm assuming they will work with Macs?

Again Thanks

Yes, any modern DVI monitor should work. There's the DVI-D and a DVI Mini connector. Worse case, you may have to buy an adapter.

Thanks for the tip! I have just picked up an older 30 inch Apple Cinema display with dual DVI for $500 on http://losangeles.craigslist.org. It is Apple's last big one that doesn't have the reflective glass and it works great with a new Mac Mini. I plan to repair it when it goes dark so your tip might come in very handy.
