Local commercials and SRO licensing

Just an FYI for those writing for local commercials (non-national spots).

I spoke to the guys at BMI Nashville who handle this stuff as I haven't received payments in about two years for local spots, even though the media buys and samples were submitted.

Apparently, unless a spot airs nationally and is picked up by the automated systems, it won't be paid. If it is aired nationally and media buys are submitted for local airing, the local airings will be paid, but not before it airs nationally.

This really sucks as some markets paid as much as a buck or more per spot locally for a :30 spot. Doesn't sound like much, but a few thousand spots can make a pretty big change in what might be an otherwise meager payment in a quarter.

Moral: Local spots are going to cost more to produce to cover that loss. Then again, nationals won't be sharing distribution with locals and will probably pay even better than they already do.

File under: stuff you should know.
