Digital Performer - Hollywood Scoring

Post by c0mp0ser »

Hi DP Fans,

This video is a couple months old now, but I thought I would share it here:

https://vimeo.com/41583064

Showing the process of going from DP to orchestration to recording. My Cinesamples partner and I produced this video this year to promote recording in Los Angeles, and have a solution for remote recording HERE, from other parts of the world. Some of you who are familiar with the AFM would understand there have been some bumps in the road. But we're making progress on bringing orchestral recording back to where it belongs, to Los Angeles.

Very interesting, Mike. I'm curious as to what kinds of bumps there have been. What kind of trouble does the AFM give you? Is Ray Hair the king of that bunch now? He started in Fort Worth, then took over Dallas, and was a pain in the ___ of every musician in town. I'll stop there for now, but it's just been odd to me that someone could turn a union into such an adversarial "partner" for any profession.

Anyway, I like what you're doing. At least… what it appears that you're doing. I hope it works out for you. Seems you could do very well with that.

Also… when did movie scoring leave Los Angeles? Where did it go? London? Seems to me that most movies are still scored in LA; is that not correct?

Hey Shoosh,

Dark Night Rises, The Avengers, Hunger Games... many of the biggest recent movies have been recorded in London. Marvel does all their moves in London.

There there is videogames, which is mostly recorded elsewhere, London, Prague, Seattle, Nashville.

I have hope though. :) I don't want to turn this into an AFM thread... it may crash the MOTUNATION server. :)

Glad you liked the video!

While they're still scoring big orchestras in L.A. and New York on proper soundstages, they've moved a lot of it overseas (as a lot of "hot" film composers happen not to be American and orchestras are decidedly cheaper to book anywhere but here). Everybody else is doing it out of their houses/home studios. In ten more years, we'll be talking about a 100-piece film orchestra the same way we'll be talking about shooting on film or buying CDs.

Hi Mike, Thanks for that but is there more? What I saw was a split screen with some sequencing, some notation, and the session, but nothing about the actual process or how you're connecting that to the critical aspect: bringing sessions back to Hollywood.

And a bit o/t - have you heard from Avraham Sternklar of late? How's he doing?

(Note to other members: Mike and I had the same piano/comp teacher on Long island and a better musician you will not find anywhere!)

Hey MLC!

No, that reminds me to call Avraham. It has been a while, I emailed him about 2 years ago, that was the last time. Yes, probably one of the best musicians.

Back on topic. Yes, this is part of our music services venture to record in Los Angeles, remotely. Here is a video that we produced that is more in line with "getting recording back to LA":
