This is known as a "Renault Noise". They used to make very strange, scary noises. There was no reason, and they never made the same noise again.

???
The only sound was coming from me& it wasn't pretty! lol
Can you explain?
it felt like the Mac needed to reconfigure the USB bus, even though I know that's unlikely. I'll probably never know what it was.

kgdrum wrote:besides being cheap, my desire to keep my setup as simple as possible has helped me hold off getting into VEP on the assumption that DP and Mac's going 64bit would hopefully make VEP unnecessary for what I do.
I hope with these 64bit leaps, the need for more than 1 Mac is solved for me. I don't do Orchestral or Soundtracks or really anything that requires the kind of massive rigs required for that type of creation.
VEP looks like a great bridging technology but IMO with things going 64 bit unless your actually doing massive MIDI/sample scoring projects the need for such technology will become less relevant for a modest approach setup wise.
I don't think you even have to worry about having 2 Macs now- I just have an old Mac Pro running 32 bit and I can still load up on just that Mac a massive 18 instances of Kontakt 3.5 with fully loaded orchestral set up in Bidule, in addition to having Battery and Pro 53, Synful orchestra and I have no problems with that setup, so I think you're very good to go, especially if you're notdoing big orchestral simulations!

KG, it's just a generic name for any problem with anything that has no apparent cause, is inexplicable, and is never repeated. It's the sort of problem that immediately disappears as soon as you engage a technician to repair it.

Gravity Jim wrote:All this talk of whether an older Mac can even run a 64-bit kernel got me wondering, so I went and did some research this AM....

If what I'm reading is correct, my machine just makes the grade (early 2008 8-core Intel). And I found that I've been running a 64-bit kernel since installing Lion and didn't even know it: it defaults on boot to 64-bit mode.

Good news here.
That's awesome for you but, dang strange! My machine is an early 2008 8-core Intel and it will NOT boot into 64bit mode. As I stated earlier, it's how the code for SL is written that prevents 64bit booting on my machine. I'm starting to wonder if Lion would get me there? I've searched around a lot, but I can't find anything that indicates that it would, but that's main dif between our two systems as far as I can tell. …actually, i can't find the spec on speed of your mac jim. is it a 3ghz 8-core?

OK , now I get it ;)
I'll stick with the ghosts of 32bit past seeking revenge for my 64bit betrayal lol
Thanks

So wait. Do I need to be booted into 64bit mode to get access to more than 4gb of RAM (or is it 2?)? That's my assumption. thx.

For the last time: NO!
You don't have to boot into 64bit kernel to run 64bit applications. And 64bit apps can access lots and lots of memory. It's just the kernel that can't access more than 4gb of ram. Which won't be a problem until you start using 100gb+ of ram.
The biggest issue would be if the drivers (on kernel level) for any of your gear is only available as 64bit. Then you're screwed.

Okay! [jeez] I posted this question before the avalanche of info in the General Mac forum confirmed this. Thank you.

So I finally got around to checking out if my older intel Mac Pro(from 2007)would boot in 64 bit mode, and crap, I don't think it will. I tried the Terminal command mentioned earlier in this thread and it came up with:
"firmware-abi" = <"EFI32">
so I think I'm SOL. I read earlier there's a "hack", a way to fool my Mac to using 64 bit mode. Has anyone tried this and can they report if it's been successful or is it a dangerous thing to do to my otherwise very stable Mac?!

It seems (and please correct me if I'm wrong), that even in 32 bit mode I should be able to use 64 bit apps and if I uncheck the "Open in 32 bit mode" box in Get Info under those apps it will possibly help the 64 bit apps use more RAM even with a 32 bit computer. Does that sound right?

Thanks for any advice and help!

Yes, that's right, Franky, and there should be no reason to hack.

FWIW, I am running the 2.8GHz early 2008 8-core with Snow Leopard (model 3,1) and holding the 6 and 4 keys (NOT the ones on the keypad but on the main keyboard) boots me into 64-bit without a problem.

Thanks Gary. Yes, you must hold the QWERTY and not the numeric keys!

Hope you're doing well, my friend.

Doing well! I need to talk to you offline about getting some advice for some keyboard stuff for some people that you don't care about...
