That would be cool, or I could drive up there (you'll have to wear The Pants). If you do come down and I'm not here, check over the boxing ring. :) (very inside joke).

I love a happy ending.

How's it going?
Going pretty well.

Finally got most of the cuts from the music director.
(I already had three in progress...waiting on endings on two of those and one complete-except for drums)

I chose the hardest one first (or fourth!)..."We Can Do It" from The Producers. Did it all in DP, saved as a SMF and imported and let Finale generate a score which it did fairly well.
However, when I pulled up my template to copy and paste, all of the (MANY) time signatures (of course) did not copy, so I ended up just modifying what Finale brought in in the first place...document note font, loaded a library, etc.

On the second (or fifth) it's "I Don't Need Anything But You" from Annie.

I listened, and decided this one would go straight into Finale which is what I'm doing now. About 2 hours for the first minute of music, but now I can copy and paste a lot of it.

I am experimenting with Hyperscribe...entered the bass that way and may venture further.

So, I'm back and forth between Finale and Finale help!

Thanks for asking...

I upgrade Finale every three years or so. I think the biggest improvement in 2011 is that the lyric tool finally appears to be working correctly - 25 years or so later.

I only use Finale for heavy lifting. For lead sheets and most church work, Encore is still faster - as buggy as it is (and it is). At least, with MusicXML, I can transfer among Encore, Finale and SmartScore X Pro (a total waste of money if you are working in OS 10.6.x, BTW)

Yeah, it's been a while since there's been a version of Finale that I've been really happy with. In fact, I don't know if there's ever been a version of Finale that I've really been happy with. I guess 2011 is about as close to happy as it gets with Finale. I've been having good luck with it.

I thought F2006 was pretty solid - but not without faults. I didn't think I could ever be without the Mass Mover, but I find the new method growing on me.

It took me a while to get used to the new tool set, but now I think it blows away the mass mover tool.

It took me about a year to get used to it-- not because the new way wasn't better. It was more due to all the "brain burps" that resulted from years of doing it differently with the Mass Mover. It suddenly became a matter of learning what *not* to do as the workflow was streamlined.

Yoda: Unlearn what you have learned.

I still miss the little red truck, but the new method is undoubtedly well-implemented and well-served.

... and the double hit on the ESC key brings you to the pointer and, essentially, the new Mass mover (selection tool).

Finale 2011

Post by buzzsmith »

I managed to get a handle on most of what I needed for this 19 song arranging project.

I only have 2 left to print for tomorrow's rehearsal.

I found a few shortcuts, but did not (literally) have time to investigate future time saving tips.

I found a few things that I'm not understanding, but I managed a workaround.

Looking forward to having the time to locate more shortcut key commands and more understanding of the generate parts procedure, to mention one. I can do it, but the formatting is not exactly what I was expecting. I manually fix each part...instrument name missing, some text off the page, etc.

More later!...

Happy to report that the rehearsal went well...NO "train wrecks" with the 19 arrangements!

Somehow, I did not print 1 synth part for me, 1 part for the bassist and a page 2 for the Tenor Sax on one song...no clue how that happened as I did them in score order, one after another (?).

Hmm. I printed out a score the other day and page 2 was missing. Are we seeing a pattern?

I've probably printed out about 2500 pages in the last 6 months and not a glitch. Even printed a mini book (quite tricky) yesterday with about 80 pages and again, Finale didn't blink.

And then I saw this:

And I wondered if these two threads might be related...
