828MkIII Digital Output Level causes clipping - Why?

Post by Rev.F »

Hi,
I have tried Toslink and SPIDIF outputs into various pieces of kit and get a consistent issue -
I get clipping registering on the inputs of the receiving gear.
This happens when playing std ripped CDs and also playing Spotify - so it's not my recordings! ;o)
It is not possible to notice clipping on the 828MkIII panel because it only registers "-1" as a maximum. A bit of a strange design...

Has anyone else found this? - Is there a cure?
Do I need to go back to an ealier driver?
I am running XP, and I am old/experienced and know what I am doing...
(Most of the time" ;o)

Many thanks!

Two thoughts:
1) Are you sure no gain is being added somewhere in your signal path?
2) Is the receiving device clocked to the 828?

Thanks for the reply.
No. - No other kit. - Just a digital line to the next piece of kit (several tried) which clips with some tracks.
I've tried it re-sampling, taking timing from the stream, and also taking timing from word-clock. - It seems to make no difference.
Weird Huh?

I can only imagine that the 828MkIII is putting out too high a signal. But I don't understand how that could be, as you would think that a digital signal could only go the max figure and stop... However it can clearly go over - because the distortion is audible sometimes.

I was hoping it may be a driver issue, and that someone could point out a better driver for XP, as Motu are presumably looking more at Win7 now...

Anyone have any other ideas? - Thanks!

Are you sure that the unit you're sending the signal to is set-up to receive line level signal? Maybe the clipping is happening from the input stage of that gear and not the Motu's output. I use mine successfully to send to a TC Electronics M300 reverb unit, but it has a line in level control that I have adjusted to a little less than halfway.

Just a thought,
Billy
