Happy Birthday, Ottorino Respighi
This morning the radio was playing a retrospective of Respighi's work in honor of his birthday. I can't believe that I have neglected this man's music for all these years. The Roman Trilogy is absolutely jaw-dropping stunning. I'm an instant fan!

OMG! You haven't lived until you've heard the Pines of Rome live. WOW! Even a second rate regional orchestra tears up the paint on the walls with that one!!!
More sound than you ever thought was possible.

Agreed. I went to the concert hall a few weeks ago, and they play Pines and Fountains of Rome. It is so impressive... the brass that played the "buccine" was in front and in the back of where I was sitting. It sounded great. This is such a master piece. I LOVE IT!

Has anybody here actually heard the piece with the original Buccine??
I know they are ancient, but I would suppose the finer orchestras might have a few of these instruments not only for the ocassion, but for "completeness' " sake, or at least a modernized version of them?

OK, you've motivated me to dig out my Deutche-Grammaphone LP of the Pines and the Fountains and dust off the old turntable. Those are lovely "Tone Poems."MIDI Life Crisis wrote:OMG! I'd suppose that some recordings with the Buccine might be available on the Musical Heritage Society label. They seem to go for authentic instrumentation.
