PCI 324, yeah I know its old, but....

Post by jameytate »

I just upgraded from my old 1ghz single processor G4, to a Dual 1.8 G5 that I bought from a friend. Upon further inspection, I am now realizing that the PCI 324 doesn't fit. Is there is quick (and cheap) way around this issue??? Maybe some type of converter from PCI to PCIx???? Or do I need to go get the PCIx 424, or just move to completely different interfaces???

Thanks!!!

Jamey

Motu has an updated 424 that 'should' fit... call them, they will know...

PCI-324 won't work in the G5.

As mentioned, MOTU will upgrade you to the proper PCI-424. I think it is $300.00

However let me suggest a alternative that may be more cost effective.

You do not say what interface you are using -- 2408mk1? mk2????

If it is one of the old ones, I would be likely to try to get a newer motu interface that comes with the PCIx-424. Yes you are spending more money but you are getting a higher spec interface.

That is pretty much what I did when I got a G5 -- I was using 2408mkII and PCI-324. I got a 2408mkIII with PCIx-424 on ebay. It was more than upgrading the card with motu, but it sounds a lot better than the mkII.

Just make sure the seller has the proper card for your G5.

Also make sure that the seller is willing to transfer ownership to you (easy, they email MOTU that they sold to you, MOTU updates their records, you register it on the website)

That way you will be eligible to upgrade the card when you go to your next computer (Current standard slot for Macs and PC's is PCIe. PCIx cards do not fit this slot.)

Then you can sell your old interface and PCI 324 on ebay, as there still seems to be a market for those there.

Best Regards and good luck!
