The PCI-324 has (3) expansion ports, the PCI-424 has (4)..... but the major difference is that the PCI-424 card has built-in DSP processing that provides up to 96-channels of latency-free monitoring.
Thank you,

Thanks that is a great answer.

Now let me ask how do the expansion units clock to each other?
I am picking up a 24io and another 2408 to go with my single 2408.
Will be recieving ADAT from two sources. How does this all work? Who slaves to who?

Any MOTU unit plugged into the 324 or 424 cards will get its clock from the card itself. They will all be clocked together using the internal clock, so there's no need for wordclock between MOTU units.

Regarding your external units, be sure to set them to receive clock through the ADAT cables, or send them word clock from the MOTU units. If you have spectacular outboard gear with a great clock (a Rosetta A/D converter for instance) you may benefit from slaving the MOTU system to that clock instead.
