424 CPU usage seems absurd

Post by jborum »

I've been coping with this for some time, and I'm getting sick of it. After upgrading to my 424 system with two 2408mkIII boxes my CPU usage is absurd. The whole machine slows down, and without doing anything at all my CPU is in the 50-60% range. If I turn off one of the 2408s the meter goes down, and if I turn off both I'm down to a low level I would consider normal.

I thought the PCI card was supposed to handle the processing of audio. Why is it that the more channels I enable in the PCI console the more CPU gets sucked up? My machine is bogged down with only two interfaces, and I can't imagine adding two more.

Any help would be appreciated.

My system:
OSX 10.3.9, dual 1.25 G4, PCI 424, two 2408mkIII

After changing the "Work Priority" setting to Medium in DP the CPU seems to be overloading less. What exactly is this setting? The manual doesn't explain it except to talk about using Pro Tools hardware.
