MOTU brand control surface?

Post by James Steele »

Hmmm... I'm gonna get close to getting either the AlphaTrack or the FaderPort soon... but I was wondering with so many hardware manufacturers seeming to do a spotty job of DP support... wouldn't it be cool if MOTU made a really cool control surface that was really tightly optimized for DP... like Digi's surfaces must be for Pro Tools?

I would give my right and left leg for a mid-size (with expansion fader packs) control surface from Motu... only in my dreams would such a thing actually happen.

Mackie and Tascam are the only two companies I know who even included DP in their list of control surface layers as one of the defaults. There was the SAC-2K from Radikal that mentioned something about DP support- but I don't know if they're still making it or not... it dates back 5 years already. Sad.

I mean, I was was dumbfounded when I first saw the GarageBand control surface. It's certainly nice, but GarageBand? Sheesh.

Logic Control XT sort of *became* Mackie Control (didn't it?) The two look almost identical.

So, let's all put our heads together, make a killer DP control surface, and get a booth at NAMM 2008.

The MCU is probably the closest, although I know the manual has a chapter on another controller also (Radikal?)

The Mackie has a DP Lexan overlay, but yeah there are lots of features that could be fine tuned further for DP. Proper surround support would be great with 8 X surround panners.

MOTU please look at a newer driver for the MCU!

The Mackie supports multiple faders, up to 32 I think (maybe more). What is missing is the software compatibility between the both. An issue both Mackie and MOTU could solve.

The Mackie MCU is probably the most tightly integrated with DP.

In reality, if MOTU would simply update the driver for the MCU to include more integration with DP, it would be better than if MOTU tried to make their own hardware, IMO. MOTU hasn't updated that driver in years.....

It'd be one more step closer to MOTU's all-in-one solution to all our woes.
Then all we'd need is the Vintage Suite (FX), new VIs and the ability to address 1024 GB of RAM (for a RAMitis-afflicted buddy) and we'd have... Heavana. (Cross between Heaven and Nirvana).

Did they eventually fix MOTU's Lexan Overlay?
What they came up with sure felt like a slap in the face.
I'm referring to the text, of course.

Agreed, Jimbo; this topic pops up cyclically.
Either that, or it cycles popically. One of the two.

Great idea James, I'll see you at NAAM. When there, you should bring this idea up with Magic D

I have had the similar opinion for a few years now. With some added DSP for efx routing/monitoring or a dp bump. I'd imagine now that motu is quite branded as a product, they may beging to develop accessory products
Macbook pro, 3 gigs of ram, osx 10.62, Dp 5.13, Live 8.1.2, Reason 4, Tc powercore Virus, Albino 3.02, proper ergonomic sitting posture, plenty of coffee (french press only with a pinch of cardamon added)
My dp inspired music.....

January 18, 2007. Anaheim Convention Center. The MotU booth! For all we know, there might be one such animal there. Probably not but you never know.

I plan on getting the alpha track as the transport they make works absolutely wonderfully with DP. That said, I wouldn't mind something tightly integrated, but I'm not paying ICON prices myself. The Mackie piece, that I actually was playing with yesterday not hooked up to anything, does look really nice. The lexan overlay seemed a bit of pain, easy to knock off, but the rest of it solid (like the transport buttons). Given a lack of just room in general, the alpha track is probably going to win me over.
