GM-Edirol-VST, or ANY OTHER "GM Set" PlugIn

Post by arsaxo »

 I may be ancient but I simply like a well crafted GM/GS (both 1 & 2) MIDI sequence, and, love to abolish any MIDI-saxophone contained therein, (since MIDI saxophone is still not persuasive), replacing and often adding some extra, live saxophone of either my own, or that of my students. I cannot get hooked up with a real, old-fashioned GM/GS instrument set/PlugIn which DP 4.6x really recognizes. I ordered Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas from Sweet Water. It proports to be a VST PlugIn, which, yes, in DP, requires Audio Ease's VST Wrapper, I've had that, and bought the down-loaded update as well.

Edirol gets this message too because, to my chagrin, the instructions are STILL talking to the user about Mac OS 8xx and 9xx. No acknowledgement of OSX at all! Whaa?

It's not being seen as a VST or any other type of PlugIn. Nor can I get my brain to teach the IAC Driver and the Interactive App window to see the Edirol Set, so that it can be selected to BE the sound set instead of the Apple Software Synth.

So I am now asking if the "DP Instruments" set, in DP5x can be configured to be GM, playing the old true GM1&2 Sequences. Getting VSC to function would be just dandy wih me as well.

Hi Allen,

I'm a guitar player, and aside from arranging songs in DP, I like to use DP with GS files I've harvested from the net, practicing sight-reading by displaying the melody in notation. So I can relate to your quest. For those files I'm using the Edirol SD-20 because it handles GM, GS and XG formats.

I haven't yet gotten around to getting setup to do this in OSX without the SD-20, so I can't verify any particular recommendation for you. However, while glancing through the Sweetwater catalog last night I came across 2 products you'll want to be aware of:

Native Instruments has a VI called Bandstand that is a GM soundset with "GM2, GS and XG MIDI controller automation" and "Based on the KONTAKT 2 sample engine":

I also see one called Garritan General MIDI Library "expected January/February 2007":

I'll be interested in hearing if these work out for you.
