Audio MIDI SetUp quitting.

Post by Diazruanova »

Hi everybody,

Does anyone has experienced unexpected quits with Audio MIDI SetUp by simply clicking on the icons of IAC Driver,Network, new external device, etc?
This happens at random, some times it happens immediately upon clicking (selecting) an item, most of the times nothing happens and everything is OK.

Also, by creating a fresh account and opening the AMSU, trying to open the MIDI section, crashes and quits, so it even does NOT manage to open.

For those of you who understand the crash report., I can post it here if needed.

Thanks in advance ;-)

Not an unheard of issue. Two things for you to do. Trash the plst file. Deleete the current setup (you might have to create a new one from scratch). You should be good to go after that. If not, someone else might have to make a suggestion. That's pretty much the only thing that has fixed that issue for me.

Thanks MIDI Life Crisis (great name btw)

I am not sure how to do those things, for the prefs I suppose I have to go

~>Library>preferences>com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist

but...how do I delete the current setup? Are you talking about the Configuration pull down menu? I guess I have not created one yet, because I am using the "default" one that comes with the Mac.

I am new to Mac and am trying to build my studio by using DP and Symphonic Instruments which I ordered but have not received yet.

What I just received is my new iMac, so I am familiarizing with the OS and the programs.

Thanks for your patience.

Yes on the plst. Yes on the pull down. I am surprised it would crash off the bat. Be sure to repair permissions as well! Also, you might try running without any MIDI interface to see what happens.

Gotta run.

If you had to install any MIDI drivers (for a keyboard or otherwise) run the uninstaller, if there is one, and re-install. Or just re-install. That "may" work. At least, it won't hurt anything.

Hi, the only driver I have installed is the MOTU MIDI driver, and i will follow your advice.

Thanks

I get this strange behavior here too from time to time.

Rather rare here but I remember last time : it was on clicking on Fastlane icon.
Crashlog was related about displaying something.

Reboot (just for shure) and reload Audio MIDI and all is fine again.

I've tried that poplist tip but it hapened once again few days later.

Since I open Audiomidisetup very few times, that's not a show stoper for me.
But, shure I dislike those type of things happening in my system.

I am suspecting of an Apple bug on this problem and like you say, being a random issue that appears rarely, maybe it has not being documented enough on the forums. I am investigating further :-)

Hi again,

I am not sure if it is solved or not, because the problem has appeared before randomly, but I had the AMSU crash log revised by a programmer who knows about the OSX guts and he told me that he was not completely sure about the cause, but there, appears that on that particular crash log, some, if not all the culprits, are the so called "Haxies" that are Unsanity's(software company) "Application Enhancer" and related Haxies: Clear Dock and Window Shade that are tiny programs that appear inside the "System preferences" and modify the looks and/or behavior of certain OSX items like the Dock and/or the Windows.

I UN-installed those Haxies and the problem has not repeated, BUT I recall having this problem (very rarely indeed) long before I installed those Haxies.

Now, it seems that on this occasion, the "Quits", were because of the Haxies mentioned before, so... ?!?

I have nearly all of unsanity haxies.

If you go Applications/SystemPreferences/ApplicationEnhancer control panel
there is a trouble shooting/master exclude/troubleshooting area.

It's also important to have the most recent unsanity haxies installed.

If AMS still silently crashes then it suggests to me that something is out of wack in your OS. Especially when you mention that you created a "new" user account and it still crashed.

Have you tried to download/install the combo Mac OS updater for your Mac 's OS. Sometimes the combo updater patches the OS for missing pieces.

Of course it is very important to repair permissions before and after running the updater. I have also found it helpful to startup from the install dvd and verify/repair the hard drive with DiskUtility from the installer.

If none of these quick fixes work then you should consider an archival install.

Please excuse me if you are well aware of all that stuff.

For as much I love the functionality AE provides, I already proceed to UN-Install it and all the haxies and not exactly because of the AMSU problem, but because I discovered that it uses too much memory and I am trying to keep my system as lean as possible.

Well it does not crash precisely "silently" and yes, it seems odd that with the new account, the MIDI section does not even want to open because it crashes inmediately, but in my main account it seems to be working now without any crashes at all, so I do not think it is something really bad with my system but more related to the MOTU driver not being installed on the "new" account.

Done that already and it seems that the only-eventual- crash is only with AMSU, but right now I have been playing with it by clicking and clicking over and over ad-nauseum and nothing, not a single crash, so I think I'll let it as it is for now and try to figure out why, on the other account is crashing when trying just to open the MIDI section.

Thanks and I'll keep you posted if I find something new
