Recording problem...help!!

Post by RPB »

I'm trying to print some tracks to audio in DP 4.6.

i have an incoming signal from a outboard synth (fantom XR) that is registering successfully on the audio monitor window, but not registering in the level meter in the track window or the mixing board. it's a stereo audio track (input via SPDIF from the traveler) and output assigned to analog 1-2.

i also have a monitoring aux track set up with the same input/output assignment that successfully registers in the level meters. i've tried routing that to the audio track to record via bus, and also turning off the aux track and recording directly in the audio via SPDIF (as i previously described).

What the heck am i doing wrong??

You will not see the incoming signal in the mixer or track until it is recorded. You might see ACTIVITY in the track but if it is relatively sparse MIDI data you might not see it. Try recording and playing back. You should then see it in the mixer and track windows (assuming I understood you qeaution correctly).

You might have "Direct Hardware Playthrough" enabled.
Mixing board meters don't respond on input if it's set that way.

They'll work on playback though...

I wish you could see input level on the fader VU, even in direct hardware playthrough mode.... The audio monitor is a hard to read, unnecessary window. Just had to vent that...sorry.

in my last reply, by saying that so signal gets recorded, i mean that as i record, there is no waveform appearing, just a straight line, despite the fact that i can see a signal appearing on the level meter...aahhhhh...

so guys, i'm new to DP and MOTU

Check and see if auto record is activated. If so... it won't record/print till it reaches the punch-in spot.

Are you seeing a good strong signal on the input monitor? If you see it and the track you are recording to is record enabled, you should see a waveform. Maybe send a few loud notes and see if you get anything at all? Also, you might want to check the AUDIO PATCH THRU settings. Can you hear the signal? Other than that and what has been suggested, I'm drawing a blank. The only flat lines I ever got was when there was no signal present (and during heart surgery... :)

If there was no voice allocation the track could not be armed for record.

thanks for the attempt though!!

man, i've tried everything and nothing seems to work. i've made sure the sample rates match, clock is set to spdif. like i said, i can see the level meter registering (in both mix and audio monitor windows), but when i arm the track and hit record, it records.....but nothing actually gets recorded.

i know it's got to be something really dumb.
i know it's not the fantom because i've successfully done the same function with a different song in pro tools.

i just don't get it....can anyone else offer any advice?
