Which non-Apple 20inch wide LCDs displays do you like?

Post by emulatorloo »

I am in the market for one or two widescreen LCD displays. Have eliminated the apples because of price. Wondering if you all have any recommendations? Viewsonic? LG? Samsung? BenQ? etc etc/

THANKS

I got a 20" Viewsonic VA2012wb from Costco, $350!
It's sitting right next to my iMac 20" and looks great.
I'm thinking I might get another one.
Nothing beats an Apple display but this Viewsonic comes close enough.
Yes, I use a PC and MAC.....

I have 2 samsung 21" widescreen on my G5 and a 20'' apple on my powerbook. Samsungs are pretty good for general use, but if you do anything that involves color correction (non-audio use) there is significant shift in color over the monitor area.

Interesting feedback on "nothing beats an Apple display". That's the first I've heard anyone say that. I had mostly heard that Apple simply charges a premium on anything, assuming a captive market or at least that most customers are too lazy to shop around.

When I upgrade from a 15" G4 iMac to a G5 Intel Mac Mini next year, I will be buying a larger monitor, and have been looking into them in advance so I know what's what. My preference would be for a cinema widescreen aspect ratio, but I'm not sure who all offers those.

We use ViewSonic monitors at work (along with their Windows-only mouse and keyboard), and they are very high quality, good ergonomics (especially the mouse and keyboard) and low profile, as well as blending in well with almost anything. Very well priced also.

Well, I do have one of the older Apple Cinema Displays (the white striped plastic w rounded feet), and in terms of ergonomics and integration w the hardware/OS, it is really really nice. Simple things like adjusting the angle -- easy to manipulate, you set it, it stays there. My non-apple LCDs just don't work like that - always gotta fuss and fight w them.

But this time I am going to have to go cheaper . . .

THANKS ALL FOR THE FEEDBACK. And if anybody has any more, please add it!

I've got a Samsung 21" LCD...I think it's the model 213T, I'm not at that computer now so not positive. Couldn't be happier in terms of price/performance, reliability, & screen real estate. But it's definitely doing something different to color balance as compared to the Philips CRT I had before: all these .JPG's that I had to color-enhance & crank the contrast on to look good on my old monitor now look washed out. (Good thing I saved the originals!) So it's probably *more* accurate than the old one...but, being an audio guy, I'm not interested in splitting hairs about which is "right" visually.

The Dell displays are nice. Not as nice as the Apples, but a good 2nd choice.

I would second the dell recommendation. Apparently many of them use the same panels as the Apple displays and do pretty well against the apples. And they are way cheaper.

I've seen the Formac 2010 in action. Couldn't give it a true monitor test, but it sure looked great.

The idea of getting 3 of those ViewSonics that ECmaj7 found for less than the price of of one 23" Apple Cinema is not to be taken lightly.

Especially since they use the same internals: http://www.engadget.com/2005/04/27/anan ... y-20-inch/

Two more that are looking good

Viewsonic VX2025wm for 300.00

http://dealmac.com/deals/Viewsonic-VX20 ... 24988.html

Samsung SyncMaster 204B for 266.00

http://dealmac.com/deals/Samsung-Sync-M ... 25643.html

You know, those Dells do look nice, but Dell and Michael Dell annoy the hell out of me. . .somehow I just cant bear to give them money. Silly me I know.
