DP Install and Config Guidelines

I wasn't trying to start an argument, I was more pointing out that when people have problems with a new release, they need to more clearly describe their configurations, rather than describing the bug itself.
I second.

This config issue has been going on for a while. I did request (many, many moons ago to MOTU) a copy of THEIR test systems configs- the same systems that find everything okay when they release DP 4x- 5x. I've been politely ignored and was directed to the published minimum system requirements. I need more info- and I think we would all benefit from finding out the RANGE of setups that will run DP reliably for all users under OS X.

So, for those of us having having issues with DP, we should find some consensus on a way to compare system configs. I propose a form such as this:

*******************

Problems with DP:

DP Version:

Do you consider DP stable under your present config?

New DP Install or Upgrade:

CPU:

Drives (Internal, SCSI, FW, USB)

All other USB FW Ethernet Optical connected devices and drivers if any- even if from Apple (include keyboards and trackball mice)

Where any of these devices connected during OS install and/or DP installs?

OS Version:

OS New install/ Updated online or Manually:

For new OS- Type of Install (Minimal or Full)

Installed original OS from original CD/DVD or other (specify)

How many accounts?:

Fast User Switching on/off:

Other Audio Apps (and versions) installed:

Which apps (all types) were installed before your current DP install?

Was DP tested without any other audio apps installed?

Internal Cards and versions:

RAM config (how many and sizes):

iSight plugin/ Lame installed? :

All Plugins and types (MAS, AU or VST) even if used mainly in another app:

Other system hacks or modificatons (i.e Quickeys vs.?; language/ font deletion; Swap files on separate HD, etc.):

Aggregate device(s) created and how many?

System scanned by DiskWarrior vs ?, Disk Utility vs ?, Techtool vs ?, Other diagnostic vs ? (enter all that apply)

Comments:

*******************************

These questions may seem like an annoyance, BUT we may be able to track down differences with systems that have issues with Dp and those that don't. Please let us not argue over the right way to install or maintain our systems, or even what should be working with DP. Instead let's find out what it takes to get DP to work 100% of the time for everyone. Digi does it for ProTool users, and it's not inconceivable that we'd benefit from similar real-world system guidelines. It could be something simple like upgrading over a pre-existing version of the OS or DP doesn't reliably "take." Or the reverse could be true, such that a pre-existing version is neccessary to get everything working. Who knows for sure...?

Whatever the case, can we try this approach or even adopt another way of comparing each other's systems? Please chime in, especially if your system is issue free. We need the input about the operational systems as a check.

James: if all this potential data is eventually compiled, could a sticky of the resulting Recommended Guidelines become a "Sticky?"

"kicking" or "bumping" your post, or whatever the heck kicking you to the top of the list is called here on unicornation. . .I guess maybe "butting your post with the magic unicorn horn."

Thanks. Okay, I'll start the list.

-Yes

New DP Install or Upgrade:
-Upgrade

CPU:
-G5 Dual 2.3

Where any of these devices connected during OS install and/or DP installs?
-No. All ext. drives, hardware, and connections disconnected except Apple mouse and apple keyboard

URS Everything EQ bundle
Altiverb 5

Other system hacks or modificatons (i.e Quickeys vs.?; language/ font deletion; Swap files on separate HD, etc.):
-Quickkeys X

Aggregate device(s) created and how many?
-None

System scanned by DiskWarrior vs ?, Disk Utility vs ?, Techtool vs ?, Other diagnostic vs ? (enter all that apply)
-DW 3.03, TechTool 4.1.1, DU 1.5

Comments:

I found that using non-current utilities will seem to work okay, but current versions will catch things the non-current missed. OS updates don't like ANY system hacks, like removing fonts or changing folders of default location of folders/ items- sometimes things appear okay but actually are unstable. Installation with hardware/ connections disconnected has made a difference over my previous installations. Next time (OS 10.5) I may remove the internal card also before OS install. Try to keep 10GB free on the startup disk/ partition.

Restart before using DP for serious work to clear all the office/ internet stuff in the caches.

Chris, I think it's a great idea, and a noble cause, but for my tastes the list is too long and involved, though if everyone would contribute to it, the info should be most helpful. I think one of the most important questions you can ask is missing from your list: what driver versions are you using?

I'd forgotten about your list when I started my thread last night, or I might have just added mine to yours. But now we have two threads going, and the last thing I want to do is to confuse anyone as to which one they should participate in. So, let me ask you if you'd add the drivers question to yours. Then anyone who fills out your form will be contributing to both lists, as I can simply copy the relevant info from your list to my Excel database. I've got about 8 contributors so far, but I need your driver versions to make your entry complete.

I'll share my Excel spreadsheet at any time. Let me know if you want a copy. It's pretty spotty and incomplete, but the drivers section is coming along nicely.

Thanks Shooshie.

The drivers question was (unfortunately) implied with versions of hardware /cards. easily added if anyone cares to contribute, as my original requested suggestions for content of such a form.

We could also respond only to the parts deemed relevant by the the individual.

Do you consider DP stable under your present config? Very Stable, no crashes at all yet.

All other USB FW Ethernet Optical connected devices and drivers if any- even if from Apple (include keyboards and trackball mice)

Apple Keyboard and Mouse
M-audio midisport 2x2
M-audio uno
AKAI S5000 connected via internal USB card-AK.SYS runs at the same time as DP with no ill effects

Firewire:
MOTU 828 MKII

Where any of these devices connected during OS install and/or DP installs?

Not connected during OS install but during DP install.

OS Version: 10.3.9

For new OS- Type of Install (Minimal or Full) Full

Installed original OS from original CD/DVD or other (specify) System Install CD

Other Audio Apps (and versions) installed:
DSP Quattro 2.0,
Reason 2.5

Which apps (all types) were installed before your current DP install?
Ilife
Extensis Suitcase
Adobe Creative Suite

Was DP tested without any other audio apps installed? No need to.

Internal Cards and versions: None (g5 iMAC)

RAM config (how many and sizes): 768mb (1 256, 1 512)

iSight plugin/ Lame installed? : no isight, not sure about lame

All Plugins and types (MAS, AU or VST) even if used mainly in another app:
izotope:
idrum
vinyl

Other system hacks or modificatons (i.e Quickeys vs.?; language/ font deletion; Swap files on separate HD, etc.):
None

Aggregate device(s) created and how many?
Not supprted

System scanned by DiskWarrior vs ?, Disk Utility vs ?, Techtool vs ?, Other diagnostic vs ? (enter all that apply)
Techtool

Comments: Had some issues trying to run MIDI in through the ARP plugin to the new VI's but that was only with an older m-audio USB keystation that apparently has all sorts of known issues anyway. Otherwise, the arp MIDI plugin to to VI work fine, even with MIDI-keys. I think MIDI-keys may be a good tool researching the stuck MIDI note thing to eliminate variables since is not dependant on a thrid party driver.

Crap, the driver version came up while I was answering the questions. I'll have to check but I know it's the version on the CD it shipped with - the updated driver didn't work for me, can't remember what exactly it did, will research
