RMS Levels

Post by DMBDrummer »

I was just curious to know what RMS level you video guys strive for when doing audio for video.

I've been using anywhere between -11 and -12 RMS levels for pop CDs but I don't know how loud I should make my DVD audio.

I pose the question of RMS value because I don't want to have vast volume differences when switching between submenus.

I've actually never concerned myself with RMS levels for video. I just go for overall balance.

I do keep peak levels below -6.0 dBFS, for what that's worth.

Yeah, most of my stuff ends up on a Digibeta master at some point in delivery, which contributes some compression, then is compressed again for air. So, there's no way I can realistically quality-control RMS levels. It's out of my hands, by and large.
