In addition to his work with VSL and PP, Marteen leads the Project Sam team that brought us SAM Brass and True Strike. Aside from his musical abilities, he's a talented developer. I've been using his public libraries for years.

That's the funny part. That particular article was about how to translate a MIDI file into a legible score, not how to make a mockup sound believable. The piece was written to demonstrate that process.
It would be really cool if there were a way to dig into making better mockups as a matter of discussion here on U-nation. Some points are made here an there throughout the forum, and other data is Googled ad nauseum.

Having read the VI Control thread, it's amazing what extent some people won't resort to tear something like Thomas' track apart in the name of constructive criticism. Thankfully, he has plenty of admirers as well.

But it's led me to resolve that while even the best virtual mockups will always be taken with a grain of salt or outright rejected, virtual instruments are here to stay. We may as well do all we can to embrace the art in an effort to improve it because the only other alternative is to abandon it... and we've come too far to leave it behind.

I subscribe to that magazine, and it's pretty cool. It's tailored to what we do. But honestly, most of what you read in that mag can be gleaned from scouring the boards. I've been reading NSS and now VI Control since I got into orchestral sampling a few years ago and I have learned tons just by reading the various threads.
