single 1ghz G4 crashing on iTunes - due to different Ram

Post by Kawentzmann »

Here••™s my problem, which is basically only happening with iTunes, but it might cause trouble to other audio progs.
Somebody mentioned to me that kernel panic crashes, which happen to me a lot when I work on iTunes playlists, are usually caused by bad ram blocks.
I am pretty sure the ram bars themselves are ok, but I found that I have a mismatch in speed:

DIMM0/J21:
size: 256 MB
type: DDR SDRAM
speed: PC2100U-25330
status: OK

DIMM1/J22:
size: 512 MB
type: DDR SDRAM
speed: PC2100U-25330
status: OK

DIMM2/J23:
size: 512 MB
type: DDR SDRAM
speed: PC2700U-25330
status: OK

DIMM3/J20:
empty

which is the right type for my G4?
and where can I get a good helping, like a 1gig segment?

Your problem is related to OSX and the PCI 324, I'm afraid... I had the most terrible kernel panics in iTunes, Final Cut, in fact everything but DP. Whenever you use the PCI 324 for system audio, this will cause problems.

I recommend using built in audio for everything but DP, or get a PCI 424

Try this url for RAM information

http://www.crucial.com/

Also, do you have this driver update installed for your pci 324

I emphasise that I think your problem is not related to RAM, but the well-documented kernel panic problems with the 324 card and OSX....

I don't know if this is conclusive evidence, but all my kernel panics have been vanquished with Disk Warrior. One of the Apple "geniuses" once told me that KPs are software related. He added that with hardware problems, the computer just stops working without giving you warning messages. That makes sense, and is consistent with my experience. But, then, I've read posts from people who think KPs are a hardware issue. So, if you have Disk Warrior, go ahead and run it... it might work for you like it has for me.

Thanks for all the input.
I tried the DiskWarrior, the new MOTU PCI 324 driver and using built-in audio, and only the latter was of use. So I guess it••™s hardware based trouble, but with the 324, not the ram.

Please just set your system audio to built in and not the 324, and see if the problem disappears
