Apple's internal hd expansion limit still concerns me. External drives are fine, but having a third internal drive would be more than a matter of convenience.

If you're willing to give up a PCI slot, you can get up to 5 in there. I have 4 in mine.

Yeah, I don't understand why they went backward with the G5. My PowerMac G4 holds 4 internal HDs, but the G5s only hold 2? Doesn't make sense.

No, you can't put them in PCI slots, but you can buy a bracket to mount additional drives inside the case. You need a PCI slot for a SATA PCI adapter to get the data off your drives.

A lot of people are already using all their PCI slots for UAD/Powercore and audio interfaces.

I did the bracket with a scsi card. running 15k spin drives. It's amazing!

i went w/ external sata drives via pci card ..Firmtek Seritek, they are great!you put drives in bundled enclosures
i use boot drive for apps ,2nd internal for samples and external drives (2 in each encosure) set up in raid array ..2nd enclosure serves as as backup,i did not mirror enclosures as this would slow things down as i understand it.
this is a good solution,i did not feel good about cramming 4-5 drives in G5 enclosure designed for 2 drives too many heat/fan /noise related issues potentially check out @ OWC
2012 Mac Pro 3.46GHz 12 core 96 gig,Mojave, DP11.01,Logic 10.51, RME UCX,Great River ME-1NV,a few microphones,UAD2, Komplete 12U,U-he,Omni & way too many VI's,Synths & FX galore!, Mimic Pro w/ SD3,Focal Twin 6 monitors, Shunyata...........

five drives to a g5 tower
With two drives it's already pretty warm in there. I can't imagine the heat level generated with all of that... :?
