One note missing from my DP input??

Post by bbowers »

Here's a fun one,
DP 4.61
OSX 10.3.9
1Gb RAM
Dual 1GHZ G4
MIDIman 2x2

I have a problem with MIDI patch thru on DP 4.61. One note (F#2) fails to patch thru if I do not have "Use CoreMIDI patch thru" checked. Actually it fails to be input at all. It doesn't patch thru or record to the track.

Please read this through because I am sure about now everyone is deciding that I just have a flaky MIDI interface or keyboard. Not the case ;-)

Here are the facts:

MIDI Monitor shows input activity when I play the F#2
If I have CoreMIDI patch thru selected it patches thru and records fine.
It has the exact same response using two different keyboard controllers
It does the same thing using the internal Apple Softsynth as a sound source
If I manually place an F#2 in the track it plays back fine and sounds when I click on it
I also tested all of the hardware using my laptop to run DP and all was fine.

Things I have done that have made no difference

Created a new MIDI config file for CoreMIDI
Reinstalled DP
Tried lower versions of DP down to 4.12

Since i have already re-installed DP and trashed the MIDI setup file,
is there some other MIDI config or DP preference file I could trash that would fix this? Otherwise I am really at a loss. I can't use CoreMIDI patch thru because I use MIDI plug-ins.

Thanks,

Check your keycommands. You probably have a key command selected to that note. That happens to me occasionally(the exact same note) and it's assigned to switch chunks on my system. Get's activated for some reason here or there so I know how to fix it asap. Let me know if that's the problem.

Thanks daveyboy,

That was it.

I'll drop this in for anyone down the line who might find this topic in a search.

I have had this problem in the past, but it manifested in the form of the focus jumping to a new sequence when I played a certain note on the keyboard. Pretty easy to figure out when that happens. This time there was only one sequence. So nothing happened to clue me in. The note just refused to play or record from MIDI input.

You can convince DP to obstain from this moronic habit by unchecking "Add Chunk Selection Commands Automatically" in the Commands window mini menu.

If you have a default "New File" make sure it doesn't have one of these chunk select key commands built in. That was what bit me here. Every time I tested this I created a "New" file and, bingo it had this key command built in.

Well thanks to daveyboy I can go back to the recording I startted to do yesterday

This happened to me once as well, it's a real pain if you don't know what the hell is going on! :)

I agree. The default should be off. I don't know if it is or isn't, as I've been using the same prefs and templates for years.

Sometimes I pity the poor fellow starting out on DP. Simple, it ain't.

PS: I put a tip in the tips sheet on this. I wrote it myself, but credited bbowers and daveyboy as the inspiration, with a link to this thread. It's at the bottom of the current tips sheet "part two."

Thanks Shooshie,

I gotta say this forum pretty much makes going to the MOTU tech support search function a waste of time. I really appreciate those tips!

I agree! I recently ran into that bizarre MachFive issue where all of the text disappeared. Searching the MOTU Tech Support pages yielded nothing! NOTHING! Wow, you'd think that MOTU would know about that one.

Suffice it to say, this site is immensely more useful.

Yeah, same thing happened to me about two weeks ago. Fortunately, a thread existed that explained the whole thing. Easy fix. Couldn't that have gone in the "update notes" or something?
