Questions about MIDI/QuickScribe editors

Post by foorere »

I wish to clean up various MIDI recordings.
Question 1: Can I select several notes in MIDI editor and tell QuickScribe to move notes to a certain staff?

Here are the examples. The first measure notes all should be in the upper staff, in one voice.
In MIDI:

Here, how it should be:

Question 2: can I select several notes in MIDI editor and tell QuickScribe to move these notes to a certain voice (First or upper voice, second or lower voice)?

Here I would like to separate the voices. The selected notes in MIDI should be in the secondary voice.

In answer to question #1, there is a command in the mini menu to SWITCH STAFF.

Regarding question #2, I don't think DP has any capacity to control voices. It will automatically force voice separations when required to by overlapping rhythms. Those are things you have to do outside DP in the final notation editor.

Ah, the mini menu, I have to re-discover this. Reading the manual!

So, it is not possible to write two-part invention in one staff at all?

You can write a 2-part invention. However, DP will point stems in the same direction when there are unison rhythms. The result will be readable, but DP won't follow any of the "grammar" for multi-voice stem directions.

There aren't any functions to define notes as belonging to a specific voice.

If you were planning to export, you could keep them on separate tracks and perhaps merge them as separate voices in the notation editor.

What I have done is to choose the Grand Staff as the score option for the track, and then used "Switch Staff" command from the mini menu.

A question: can I change the clef in the middle of the piece for the Grand Staff? I would like to start with the G clef in LH.

Unfortunately, DP doesn't support clef changes; and there's no acceptable workaround.

DP supports MusicXML 3.0 export. Separating voices, clef changes etc. are often best done in a notation app.

I'm not a fan of MuseScore but it is free, I use Finale and also have Dorico (and a few others not worth discussing until/if ever they get updated)..

I'll confess that out of desperation I've used this workaround I've used involves Apple's Screenshot utility, and Apple's Preview.

In short, in Preview I make a blank PNG file the size of a page.

In DP, I zoom the page to fit the screen, and use the screenshot to grab parts of the score, which I then drag onto my blank PNG page; aligning and corner-dragging to fit. Then in DP, I make the clef change to the whole part, and drag those portions into my PNG. And keep going until its down. After this, in Preview, I can put additional clefs in the PNG where they are needed (and will fit).

I don't recommend this. But let's call it an "emergency" option.

Whatever works—works!

Although there are other ways of doing this including Acrobat Pro, your way is simpler and faster.
