Sonoma 14.3 dropped!

Post by James Steele »

Looks like macOS 14.3 Sonoma is available now. I'll probably install in the morning.

I gritted my teeth, put on my big-boy pants, did a fully back-up, and then updated from Monterey 12.7.2 straight up to Sonoma 14.3. (before clicking go, I did see an available 12.7.3 update, but decided to jump). I'm not in the middle of any critical projects.

Some little problems I was having in 12.7.2 (like with RME FF800, TotalMix, and Mail) are still persisting. But otherwise, and so far, it's fine. Updated Finale and Zoom, right away.

I'll need to go through and do some more updates of plugins and other bits. But it seems like the general thing is ok.

The update features seem pretty gimmicky, but not all that ground-breaking. Perhaps there were some from Ventura (which I skipped over) that I'll need to check out.

I just looked at the Sweetwater compatibility chart and I'm still amazed that so many companies are still reporting lack of support for Sonoma, especially since I have seen so much anecdotal evidence that there is a clear path - not that I'm itching to upgrade. I think it may have been February or March of 2023 before I finally moved to Ventura. The only enticing feature I am eyeing in Ventura is (alleged) better multi-core support.

I'm not foolhardy enough to say that other people should do it, but I've been on Sonoma 14.3 and having a pretty good experience. I don't know why Sweetwater's chart is the way it is. I don't know if companies are just being hyper-conservative and hedging their bets, but everything I have seems to be working pretty well.

My only holdouts are

a) Acrobat Pro which Adobe keeps promising to fix.

b) Notation: Encore which last worked over Mojave. The new (original) owner has promised an update by December 2022 and again by December 2023. I think that Don is running a bit late. Having Finale & Dorico, I don't really need Encore anymore but it served a purpose and I would like to see it come back. Notion 5 (Fender has promised an update) and Overture 5 (Don Williams again) still work but are not as compatible as I'd like. MuseScore 4 has improved to No longer horrible but Muse Group is flu$h having just bought Hal Leonard and are making noises that MuseScore 5 will be better and have a major AI component—will be interesting.

c) Certain VIs from Boz Digital that do not work over Apple Silicon. I've found substitutes but wish that Boz would get off the stick.

Other than that, trying to keep things up to date.

I see that the CodeMeter Run Time, the license agent that Antares and a few other apps use, has updated to v.8 for Sonoma and Win11 compatibility.

Although Antares has recently released Sonoma/Win11 updates through Auto-Tune Central.app, CodeMeter RT must be updated separately. RT versions older than 7.10 install .kxt files that can really, really mess up a Mac — later installers remove those during the update.

Did 14.3 fix Bluetooth? Since Sonoma my MacStudio hasn't been able to connect with my iPad (16.6).

Bluetooth is fine. There’s a setup issue in Ventura/Sonoma that wasn’t documented properly when I encountered it last October. Other than having to call Apple, I no longer recall the details.

My Bluetooth was unusable 14.2 (or whatever it was before 14.3) but I updated to 14.3 and now Bluetooth works well. Either they fixed it or I accidentally am doing it right! :-)

On one hand, Sonoma has been low-pain, low-gain. But the pains are adding up-- so many little annoying glitches.

Little error windows that pop up after booting. Text glitches while typing in text entry fields like this one. Intermittent internet login failures-- specific only to this Sonoma machine. Not many others, but still, far from smooth sailing. Source Audio's editor broke with the latest update because it's prevented from connecting to the cloud patches, etc. etc.

Yes, when I make hand gestures in a zoom meeting, there's a little uninvited light show. That's fancy.

The subject of this thread paints a picture, with brown paint.

FWIW, I’m on Sonoma 14.3.1 and it’s been a pretty good experience for me. Proof that the YMMV principle is eternal I guess.
