What is the smart way to do this?

This assumes proper permissions and resource forks intact etc. I can walk you through Permissions but I've forgotten everything I once knew about resource forks etc.

I would attach a file in a TechLink to MOTU to see if they can open it—if so, they can tell you how. If they say it's corrupted and can't be opened, well, that's not the end of the world as I learned when DP 7.2 came out.
