Thanks for the info. MOTU 828 mk3 FW arrived and appears to be working just fine with Firewire or standalone and doing everything I hoped for so far. If anyone can confirm for me, I have to use up two mixes (busses) if I want to patch both ins and outs, right? For example, I want to route RCA S/PDIF in and out to Adat 1/2 in and out. Thanks again, especially Mike.
[Update] Wow, that MOTU 828 mk3 does it all and simultaneously (RCA S/PDIF, Toslink optical, analog).
