Anyone using Backblaze as backup?

Post by ironchef_marc »

I'm using it and had it set to default settings in terms of doing backups.

I had an issue earlier this week where one of my project file got corrupted (even all my autosaves). Motu tech support think it might have been caused by Backblaze and recommended that I set it to manual backups. I'm not entirely convinced that this would be the culprit but I haven't been using it long enough to know for sure.

I thought I'd check with to see if anyone else is using it and had any issues.

I've been running BackBlaze for about a year. I have had hard crashes when scoring to video that may be attributable to BB, but I have no way of knowing for sure. Crash Log would show "Bad video access". I kept the videos on my Mac Studio's internal SSD, so inadequate drive speed can be ruled out. It seemed that the crashes were eliminated or reduced if BB was not running while I was running DP, but the problem was so irregular and infrequent, I couldn't make a reliable determination.

That said, I've never had a file go bad on me with the Mac Studio.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
First time in 25 years I've had a corrupted file like this (well plus 18 autosaves throughout the day)

MOTU is blaming the occasional -43 error on Time Machine without a shred of evidence. I don't believe they are even looking for the cause.

In any case, there is no way I would turn off Time Machine now that I also use Backblaze — if for no other reason than that TM backups are easily searched if you have Indexing on (default). To be clear, "easy" is not the same as quick but if the file is there, it can be found.

Yeah I'm skeptical too. I don't see how Backblaze would corrupt the file. It must be a DP issue. How can it save a file without warning me there's an issue when saving it? I could at least try to save it as a clipping then. Can't remember having a corrupted file in 25 years using DP. Just a little worried now everytime I open a session wondering if it will open again.

I've been using it for years. I have mine set to manual backups and always make sure backup is paused before I launch DP. This isn't for stability per se, but it does use some resources in the background so better for me to do it this way.
