Can you direct monitor a specific input through a specific output (I want this on my MOTU 4pre)?

Post by tapepusher »

Hi, can you direct monitor a specific input through a specific output e.g. listen to input 1 through output 3. I don't really want to "listen", I want to use the 4pre interface as a mic preamp to send my mic signal to a hardware looper while performing live. I can kind of do it by direct monitoring through the main outputs 1-2 and then taking a jack cable out of output 1 and sending it to my looper BUT then I can't use the interface normally for Ableton Live or whatever because I've used one of the main outputs.

Is there anyway to directly route certain inputs to certain outputs using Cuemix or other? How about any work arounds other than just buying a preamp for the mic? Even if it was input 1-2 to output 3-4 that'd be good. Any info would be appreciated!

CueMix FX
CueMix FX gives you complete control over the
4pre’s CueMix FX on-board mixer, which provides
no-latency monitoring, mixing of live inputs
through your 4pre.

Yeah but it seems to be "monitoring, mixing of live inputs
through your 4pre"'s main outputs only. I just want a single input (input 1) sent out a specific output (output 3) while also using the main outputs as normal, the manual doesn't mention that so I've asked here to see if it's possible.

In your OP, you wrote,

which is easy.

Any analog input can be routed to any output pair. See figure 8-2.

You can pan the input hard R or L in the output. This is explained on many pages.

Ah you're right. It works!

It turns out they oddly label the analog outputs 3-4 as "Analog 1-2". So all this time I thought that was a separate label to distinguish the main outputs 1-2 from the headphone jack or something, it turns out you can direct monitor out any of the outputs by selecting the mix in CueMix, I've had the MOTU4pre for around 7 years and I didn't know you could use it as a mic preamp, I'm now using it to send my mic signal to my looper pedal, awesome thanks.
