Yosemite on Macmini3,1 slow...

Post by Klaus »

Hi, hope you all are doing fine !

I have Macminis 3,1 running 10.9.5 perfectly fine for my live needs...
Tried running 10.10.5 on these, and at first sight, it seemed to work fine.
Then when 'loading' the cpu, ( same as on 10.9.6 ) that brought
it to it's knees...big difference !
There is maybe a lot USB / Ethernet traffic for remote controll of X32-Edit app
?
a touchscreen via USB > Serial Adapter is used
and a Iconpro Platform M via USB
DP recording goes via ext. Firewire...( SSD )

Could it be that Yosemite creates the poor performance ?
esp. re: USB
In 10.9.5 everything works super .
I would need Yosemite for another app...

Thanks for hints
in advance
and
best regards

The latest MacOS for these is El Capitán 10.11.6 and it's quite stable.

Are you running 4GB or 8GB RAM? The stock hard drive or have you upgraded to an SSD?

As Mike suggests, RAM might be the issue. Around the time of the 10.10 and 10.11 updates, Macs belonging to friends around here hit a brick wall with simple things like iPhoto, despite 4G being listed by Apple as adequate. Most of them went to 16G, and had no problems after that.

I also recall the earlier releases of 10.11 bricking some Macs. There was acknowledgement of some obscure problem for some Macs that later releases fixed.

Thank you all for replies !
with 4 GB Ram there is still 1,5 GB Ram free when running all apps needed...
I think to have tested 10.11 ( ) and seem to remember that
it was even worse...I will have to test again, thanks for the hint Mike !

Maybe I have found something...
:
Ethernet control of the X32-Edit app was via
3 routers - connected on the backside / LAN ports (10 / 100 )
in series...and could cause network slow down,

Not ?

This is just on my home rig, where I set things up offline...

I found out yesterday when testing on a live rig that has only 1 router 10 / 100
and the X32-Edit app was a lot easier on cpu...

BTW, my testing includes DP 7.24 recording 32 tracks from the X32Core
> back to DP

Maybe I should upgrade my wlan routers to
10/100/1000 Lan port devices

?

> Dante capable...will be my next step.

Errata :
I had activity monitor showing different layers in X32-Edit...
Here are the correct screenshots
Yosemite

Mavericks

Still more difference than I thought...
Thanks a lot
and best regards

I tested El Capitan on this Macmini3,1
and it uses even a little more cpu
well, back to Mavericks and Yosemite

Thank you all
