I suspect it has more to do with the listener's "auditory memory"

One drum trick I like (most people on here probably know this one) is to make it a kick attack track - I copy the kick track, do a big but narrow eq boost of the high-mid beater attack (click) freq and roll off everything around it, then compress it heavily. That track helps every kick hit poke through the mix, so I can use lighter compression on the main kick track it retains some dynamics.

That's a good one I use.
How about mix with your ears not your eyes.
I prefer to mix with my hands.

I hear stuff like that all the time, or turn off the screen when you're mixing... I get that, but I also don't have the greatest hearing, or monitoring environment, so I will use numerical values (dB's on volume faders or eq's) to help me make decisions.
