Resurrection Time.

Post by sparkyboyo »

I am returning to the Motu world where I had some fun a few (12) years ago with Audiodesk.
I want to get back to a usable set up starting with a 2408 mk3, a Tascam WR-DA7 and I need to pick up a Wndows 7 computer to run Audio desk. I have my eyes on a Dell Optiflex 7010 with an i7 3.5GHz chip in it. Is this a good enough machine for home fun recording.
I look forward to comments and suggestions. I want to use Audiodesk as I have the software and a certain familiarity with it, no need for wider capabilities.
I have bought a Tascam 32SD thing but find it totally uninspiring to use compared with the set up as described !!

You might consider looking at Performer Lite instead of AudioDesk. Since you have a MOTU interface, submit a Tech Link and they will put a free license and download links in your User Account. PL can be run under the 32bit or 64bit versions of Windows 7. More info in the searchable User Guide.

Other advantages to PL are that a) you have access to Tech Support b) MOTU regularly schedules small classes—up to 5 users—on its use and you can ask question and c) it supports MIDI with about 5GB of libraries for you to download and use.

Thanks Mike,
I had headaches with PL that I couldn't resolve. Old age might have been working against me.
Do you have an opinion on the Dell 7010 ?

I do not do Windows anymore so have no opinion on any PCs—sorry.

PL does have certain headache inducing features. For me, all are related to the documentation being wrong either in functions not located where the manual says they are or worse, functionality that is missing completely.

The worst is that you cannot create User Templates though I do have a convoluted workaround that works (hardest part is remembering to do it).

I don’t do WIndows either, but it’s difficult to imagine that you can’t do what you want with a reasonably recent i7, as long as you get maybe 16G RAM and a decent drive, preferably not a spinner.

As for PL, it will be fine if your projects are reasonably small in track count. I find I run out of tracks or busses pretty quickly in projects with VIs, or a lot of effects routing. The templates thing is a minor annoyance. You can store a few basic projects in a marked folder and drag out copies to use as template. The manual though is one of the great mysteries of modern technology.

MOTU 2408 mk8? Surely a typo?

Got fogged over which card to stick in this Dell. Should it be the PIC424 or the PCIe424 ?
My reading leads me to believe it's the PCI424 and I'm famous for getting it wrong.
Any help out there ?

The physical configuration is quite a bit different between the two. It's probable that, if the PC was made in the last 15 years, the PCE-424 is the only one that fits. In any case, here is MOTU's tech bulletin on this:
