Connect 1248 with MBP 2022?

Post by laurentius »

Hi there,

would like to know from you what solution(s) you could recommend to connect my beloved 1248 to my new MBP with it's Thunderbolt 4 connections? Does it have to be the adaptor from Apple (TB2 to USB-C)? Or could it be a cable like that?

Or connect it via USB cable to my USB hub? Is on these new computers the difference between the TB and USB-connections still an issue when using an audio-interface (in terms of latency)?

Thanks in advance,
L.

Just get the Apple adaptor and stick it on the end of your TB1 or TB2 cable. This is what I've always seen recommended, and it worked perfectly for me with an 828ES.

That cable will not work—it’s for connecting a Mini Display Port (MDP) monitor to a USB-C Mac. It uses the same connector but is not a Thunderbolt cable. “Thunderbolt compatible” is a nonsense marketing term and means nothing.

You can connect a 1248 over USB or Thunderbolt. For TB, get one of these cables

And plug it into one of these Apple TB2–TB3 adapters.

There is no such thing as a TB4 cable. A TB4 port allows multiple TB3 devices to be daisy-chained or connected through a TB4 hub. TB3 ports allow only one TB3 device.

MOTU does not advertise “Fast USB 2”, a spec more recent than the 8+ year old MOTU 1248. It’s possible that RTL (round trip latency) over USB might be a little slower than Thunderbolt 1 on this unit. My older, slower 828mkII Firewire works quite well with another Apple Adapter that you don’t need. Though a USB 3 cable should work, it will not be faster.
