Long time, no see

Post by Gravity Jim »

It's been way over a year since I dropped by here. Hope you are all doing well and enjoying the new version of DP.

I did the thing I said I'd never do and retired from the music business. Archived everything I ever recorded, sold all my gear, including my guitars and amps. I haven't picked up a guitar since last June. The only thing left is my old hot-rodded cheese-grater.

I'm enjoying California's beautiful landscape and weather, reading a lot, volunteering as a Support Group Facilitator with the local Alzheimer's Association, hanging out with my kids and grandkids. Between taking care of the house and our social obligations, I don't have time to miss it!

Good wishes to all the Unicorners.

Thanks Jim! Nice to hear you re doing well.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that DP11.04 seems to be running amazingly well AS-Native on the new Mac Studio... the field looks familiar, but it is a whole new ballgame!

Hey, Jim,

Nice of you to check in.

I know exactly what you mean. I retired from ASCAP and took a church choir gig to keep myself occupied about the time the pandemic hit. It moved to online only and I've never been so busy.

Great to hear that you're happy, Jim! :headbang:

DP11 on a Mac Studio or the forthcoming Mac Pro with a decent VI library and you won't even need a guitar or anything else besides a mic if you want to sing and a MIDI-controller keyboard.

Just sayin'.

Hey Jim,

Great to hear from you.
So cool that you are helping with the Alzheimers folks.
Family and home are so important too.

I do remember hearing some of your work and thinking you were very gifted.
Looks like you are finding your 'music' in other places.

Wishing you happiness and peace.
All is well

Waterstrum, that's really kind of you to say. Truth is, I feel like I used up whatever gifts I may have had. The last couple of years were really a slog, and I felt that the music wasn't as good. I was clearly missing a step in my old age.

And there are no samples of guitars that sound like guitars. You pretty much need a guitar player just like you need a sax player.

I'd love to see what DP 11 has brought, but 10.13 is the last version that will run on my 2012 Mac. I'm stuck at Mojave 10.14.6, so no 11 for me, even if I was recording like I used to

Really? I was running the DP 11 demo on my Macs. I don’t recall whether it was under High Sierra or Mojave, but Mojave is the latest macOS I’ve installed.

You can definitely run DP11 on Mojave. That’s what I’m running and I’ve got DP 11.1 working fine.

Hey Jim,

Yes, DP11 will work on Mojave, but I think that isn't the point here.
You have spent hours and hours and years and years producing music for other people.
There is a huge repository of knowledge and experience in your being.
Real world real time music stuff.
Heart and soul.
You mentioned that you've "used up" the gifts.
I highly doubt that.
In fact, I suspect you may have new gifts that you have yet to welcome.

I'm wondering what would happen if you made just one song that came from where you are right now.

Just sayin'

Same here bro'.

I encouraged him to slap a simple setup together earlier but who knows if he'll bite?

As it turned out, I had to slap a simple set-up together... an old client called and asked me to update a jingle I wrote about 20 years ago. So I borrowed an Arturia USB keyboard and fired up DP for the first time in an year... man, am I rusty!

But no, I've played everything I know a hundred times over. Really tired of hearing my own licks. I even bought a Dumble clone guitar amp and a Gibson SG, and threw myself into trying to duplicated the sensuous, continually-changing tone of Robben Ford. Alas, even after having done a seminar with the great man himself, I couldn't do it.

:banghead: No point in beating one's head against a wall. I hit my final plateau, so I'm all done. After 25 years making a living with these tools, I just can't motivate myself to make music for "fun."

PS: I thought MOTU wasn't supporting DP 11 for Mojave. Where did I get that idea?
