Falcon upgrade

Post by gavspen »

I was just about to pull the trigger and then I thought, "Wait, given my recent experience with the timing of my Mac mini M1 purchase and the introduction of the Mac Studio, if I do that it can only be a matter of days until MOTU announces full Mach V compatibility". Haha.

Funny, not funny.

I would easily bet you that will never happen. UVI took back their license with Falcon, I don't think there's a shred of evidence against this logical conclusion. I love MOTU in general, except the way they let old tech die. They still have adds on their website that make it seem like M53 etc. are current products.

https://motu.com/en-us/products/software/

This is actually kind of upsetting to me, I find it really sketchy to push software you haven't updated in 8 years or so as "Related Products". The proper term is Legacy Products. Out of nine products on that page only three of them are really working on current versions of Mac OS, and I would bet that it's not much more than three on the current version of Windows.

I agree it is unlikely MOTU is going to come up with a new version of M5. On top of that, even if they did, going to Falcon is a zero risk option. An M5 update, if it happened, would be a paid upgrade, and Falcon might still give you the upgrade deal they had if you contact them.

I think you’re both probably right. And, yes, they gave me a code for the discount. Trigger about to be pulled.

MOTU has a support article on using the MV3 libraries in the current UVI Player but the rest of MachFive functionality is left behind.

So pull the trigger. Let us know if you still get the $100 in credits once you do. If so, plenty of cool VIs to spend it on.I am liking the latest Keyboard Suite and World Traditions (or whatever it’s called these days)

UVI Player? Is that something else? UVI Workstation, maybe?

Same thing. It’s been called UVI Player and Universal UVI Player in the past.

Ok. I’ve been using Workstation but I have so much stuff I used to use in Mach 5. It’s time. I’ll let you know about the $100.

FWIW, UVI is having a sale which offers a discount on Falcon + two free expansion packs.

https://www.uvi.net/falcon?utm_source=U ... 3-28240877

If you write to UVI (as I just did) and get a discount code for the crossgrade from MachFive 3 ($179), you can also get any two expansions you like for free. That's Falcon 2 for $179 (instead of regular price of $349 or sale price of $244) plus two expansions, worth $39 each. If my math is right, that's $427 worth of stuff for $179. It's about as good a deal as there will ever be to migrate to Falcon.

I have to say, I've been downloading various "deals" lately. A lot of them have been Kontakt instruments... many requiring the full version of Kontakt which I own. The more I use Kontakt, the more I appreciate Falcon. I know Kontakt is the "big dog," but I prefer to use Falcon and I haven't quite put my finger on exactly why. Maybe it's as simple as the large print, but it just seems more user friendly, although it is complex.

Exactly my take on it. I only have Kontakt so I can use some of the interesting samples that need it. Otherwise I avoid it, and probably won't update it unless a no brainer sale comes along. I assume Kontakt's popularity comes from superb support given to the library developers. It can't be the elegance of the app itself.

AN ADDENDUM……

In case the above deal isn’t good enough, after I completed the purchase, UVI sent me a discount code for $100 off the price of software instruments and Falcon expansions. (Not sure if it applies to their plugins, but still…)

I got three more Falcon expansions for $17.

The hundred bucks applies to everything — as many of us found out when upgrading during a UVI sale. It's a good way to make your money go

It’s the optimization for large libraries.
Plus of course it’s early dominance in the market.

I agree though, in the past I’ve made my own instruments in Kontakt, and it’s all a lot more enjoyable in Falcon, even though in some ways Falcon is more complicated to use. The F sound Better and it does MPE as well so..
