String Butler?

Post by bayswater »

Someone gave me one, saying he’d never use it but I might like it. As far as i can see, it attaches to the tuners for the two E strings on a guitar with three tuners on either side, and has guides for the other four strings. I can’t imagine what the point is, unless you have a guitar that is poorly designed.

Anyone use one? Does it do anything?

Just at a glance, it looks like it is designed to optimize the string angle and pressure with respect to the nut. The problem that it might be trying to address is that some guitars' headstocks and/or tuner post placements don't give a very aggressive string angle, so open notes might buzz or imperceptibly lose energy. It's like an after-market string guide. I can't imagine it would make much difference for fretted notes. Might affect tuning stability for some guitars (for good or ill).

As someone who has several “poorly designed” Deans with the V-shaped headstock, it seems those will straighten the pull through of the strings at the nut. Although I haven’t tried one as I haven’t really felt the need and they are a bit pricey if I recall correctly.
