External HD purchase suggestions?

Post by donreynolds »

Hey all, I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this, but not sure what part of the forum to post in.

My FireWire hard drives are aging. I want to replace
I’m looking for at least two, 2TB units
These are to back up my computer and one to back up the primary drive for safety

What are your suggestion. I just want reliable for sure
There are so many options. SATA, SSD, different brands

Thanks in advance
Don

I use these with my 2010 Mac Pro: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop- ... 0cnVl&th=1

They used to run $140 for 8TB. Now $170 thanks to something something crypto. For Time Machine, a USB2 connection works fine.

I also back up each session to internal spinners for redundancy, and BackBlaze (cloud) for pleonastic redundancy.

I did a long response to this question recently. Damned if I can find it for a link.

You might find that a drive with a power supply etc will be at least 8G. A 2G drive will probably be a bus powered portable drive. I replaced my backup drives early this year and noticed most of the candidates were USB 3 and some of these did not specifically state they were USB 2 compatible. I got a pair of the big box store Seagate 8G drives.

My FW drives have a USB3 connector so I could pop a new drive into those cases, but there was no cost advantage.
