Will installing DP10 screw up DP9?

Post by daveyboy »

I use DP 9x when I need to open an old mix (I just remixed some songs recorded in 2006...). It still works on a new iMac running Catalina. It won’t open these super old projects though. To open them I need to load them into my old copy of DP 7 running inside Snow Leopard, which is running inside of Parallels, save them and then I’m able to open them in DP9. Anyway, it’s a lot of work just to get to them;-) Once in DP9x I either export them and get them into Logic, or I keep them inside of DP. After recently remixing an old 10 song project and using DP9, I had a good time but naturally was frustrated by some things that I know have been improved in 10. I’d like to upgrade to 10 but kind of don’t want to ruin my 9 install if possible. Is anyone running both side by side or will 10 overwrite too many components yielding 9 useless? Will 10 open up songs created in DP7 (which is what I’ve needed to do lately). I’m also wondering it it will open up the super old songs that were created before DP7, which my current DP9 can not open. Lots of fun science experimenting to be done here;-)

The answer is yes. To use DP 9, you must reinstall it which will mess up 10 till you reinstall that and so on…

I can open up every DP file I ever created going back to 2.xx. Other than old plugins no longer working and reassigning DP plugs that are now part of the Trim control, once I got everything sorted out, I have no problems.

Sorting things out was a bit of a pain but the issues involved changes that DP made between 7.0 and 7.1 that caused projects to crash in 7.24.

Thanks for the info! I'm not sure why but I can't open up older than DP 7 projects in DP9. Here's an example of the error message I always get. This file was saved in DP 5.13. My work around is to boot up Parallels, open it with DP 7 and then just save it. DP 9 can then open it. I would love to figure this out and not deal with DP7 at all (or 9 for that matter). Is this "fixed" in 10 or is it just something to do with my setup? BTW, I've had this same error for years on my old Mac Pro and this is a clean install on the new Mac.Image

Just a followup on my initial post for any other future travelers:

I upgraded from DP 9x to DP 10.13 this morning and then went and tried to open up a few of these "crusty old" projects that were giving me issues before and wouldn't open without my crazy work around. Now it seems I can actually open them!?! Time will tell if this continues as I don't regularly try to resurrect songs from 20 years ago but this looks very promising!

That's great. MOTU made major headway in 9.52 with regards to opening old files so this is not unexpected. Not going into all the details… suffice to say that, if they open, save as DP 10 files and declare victory.

I would spend some quality time to Open/Save as all your old files and archive them. If storing on a removable drive, zip the project folders first. This will ensure that privileges and permissions will not be a problem should you open these later on a different Mac.

It was DP 8 for me when I did this and I've always been glad that I did. Not only am I confident that my old projects will open should I ever need them but, when talking to clients resurrecting their past for this and that, I never have to say, "Well, that was 20 years ago, I hope I can access that old file…"

Yes. I wish I had done this when I had Cubase SX3 and DP 4 both running. More than an 'open/save' operation at the time, but now its a huge PITA.
