SSL UF8

Post by Ashermant »

Hi all - happy new year!

Has anybody heard if the new SSL UF8 is compatible with DP 10.13?

Thanks!

The documentation says DP compatibility is limited volume, panning and banks. ...not sure what banks is referring to.

Banks refers to banks of 8 channels.
At this point, DP compatibility is hobbled.
Looks like a nice controller.
$1299 seems a bit pricey for such a thing.
I'd pay $299... maybe $499 if they got it working fully with DP. :)
All is well

You're obviously paying for the SSL name and build quality.

Looks like a great unit 'though:

MOTU DP8.07, MachFive 3.2.1, MIDI Express XT, 24I/O
Novation, Yamaha & Roland Synths, Guitar & Bass, Kemper Rack

Hey MM....
I totally agree.
Very nice unit.
Paying SSL tax for the SSL name.
I'm frustrated that many companies don't consider DP worthy of development.

Yeah, SSL seems to have dragged its feet on this one.

YouTube has UF8 setup videos for all the usual-suspect DAW's but DP is nowhere to be found, at least thus far anyway...

A business decision no doubt :( There's a recent thread on MN that discusses why the f DP doesn't have more market share.

...meanwhile, MOTU is a hardware company. Hopefully they'll jump in at some point. Seems like they would be more likely to create a universal control surface that would more DP-inclusive.

Agreed mate, and some of us have been keen to see (and buy) one from MOTU since, like, forever.

I always thought having Direct Hardware Playthrough for DP (only, right?) on MOTU's 424 I/Os was a smart way to help DP sales along. A control surface with a few DP perks would be nice.

I'd would definitely buy one.

I'm guessing the new SSL one would probably work like HUI/MCU, which is really not much help.

The Avid/Eucon thing is such light years ahead of that, including the way it works with DP.

If Motu would build one that was DP-aware, though, it would be even better than Eucon.

As a side note, I think Presonus making a 16-fader unit that is actually affordable is wonderful (as opposed to Avid's overly expensive one), but there are no individual pan-pots?

Yup.

Honestly, I've never been that interested in a 3rd-party controller, but if MOTU made one for DP, I'd be all-in. :headbang:

If it has basic HUI features, shouldn't it then have the same compatibility as a Mackie Control?

I'm not sure of the differences between HUI & (MCU?)?

I think one came later and has more features, or is more accurate with the faders.

Again, the Eucon thing is light-years ahead of that outdated protocol.

And again, if DP would make a control-surface that is DP-Aware-Customizable, that would make the Eucon thing seem arcane.

The Eucon thing is cool if you jump between ProTools, DP and other DAWs that support it, but I really spend my whole day in DP and to have it customizable for DP would be so tremendous.

I tried the free EuControl iPad app again after like 6 years, and remember now why it didn't work for me then...the lack of physical faders and knobs.

MOTU created their own overlay for the MCU which assigns different functions to the buttons. So the MCU profile supplied with DP doesn't map to the standard buttons. Faders, pan, record, mute, banking and a few more all generally work as expected, but beyond that is where the trouble lies. Also, third party hardware doesn't copy the MCU hardware completely, so a disconnect there also.

I'd be all over that.
